centralilrookie, How do you detect those 3rd party scammers for airline tickets? I'll have to tell DS to be aware, he just booked a flight to TX for $96 roundtrip. Do they target specific airlines?

Yesteday morning looked like a total promise of a downpour. Started sprinkling so didn't walk. Plan was to go to Dad's at 0630 for rhubarb fun. I waited til 0830, nothing significant with the weather happened! The story of our lives lately. We got the rhubarb done. I pulled all the wheat grass out of the straw areas. Pulled weeds from a row of potatoes we didn't get straw on. Darn, it was too muddy to work in the straw-free areas. You can tell I'm upset about that. ;) Took step mom to the store.
Pulled a few weeds when I got home. Watered pots and filled birdbaths. By then the humidity was pretty icky.
City wide garage sales today, I may wander around town and look-see. Nothing I need really except keeping an eye out for yarn and embroidery floss. DD is in to crocheting with it. She has quite the little profitable hobby going on.
The to eye dr finally for glasses! Can't wait, I sure hate readers.

Yesterday was a roller coaster ride of emotions for sure. First thing was that it was the day that dad passed away 22yrs ago. It’s hard to believe that my oldest daughter is the same age as I was then and I’m the same age as mom was at the time. With the predicted storms moving in to the area I went to the garden to look around. I wanted to tie up tomatoes but didn’t really want to get caught in the rain so I pestered weeds with the hoe. After an hour of weed pestering I decided to go to tying up tomatoes. You guessed it after the third one the rain cut loose. Called the credit card company to dispute the scam airline ticket charge. The lady was very helpful and quite nice. The frustrating part is that everything is a process and takes time. Mumsey, we only became aware of the scam when sweetheart went to print the tickets out so we could drop mom’s off to her. The airline sells tickets at their counter on Monday mornings from 9-10 so you know where I’ll be. Thankfully our new stove and upright freezer were delivered in the afternoon. Sweethearts oldest son installed a new gas line and we’re in business. 5 days without a stove was a little frustrating!

I got up early (not normal, for me), since it was cool out (low 60s), and I went out and cleaned up some things, then mowed my lawn, and my neighbor's part of the alley, behind her garage. Then I weedwacked, the usual stuff the mower doesn't get to, plus some in the garden. Just now, when the shade hit the garden, I pulled those diseased tomato plants, then poured a hydrogen peroxide solution into the SIP - not sure if there was anything in the soil to worry about, but I figured that I'd try that. I might plant some cucumbers there now. After this, I sprayed much of the garden with a potassium bicarbonate solution - a safe fungus preventative (hopefully!) - works even better with oil added, but that's not safe at higher temperatures, and I have 6 days of 90+ days in my forecast!

Got up before dawn this morning and went out to work at daylight, which I haven't done in a long time. Finally secured the trellis for the noodle beans and the cattle panel arch as the cut short beans are up. Tackled the tangled tomato bed and got everything pruned and tied except the determinates. Cut the peas off at the ground and have that trellis ready for planting Kentucky Wonder beans. Corn is soaking and will either pop it in the ground or in cell packs in the morning. Weeded bed along the back of the house and laid cardboard out to smother grass for new herb bed. Everything out of old herb bed except for one huge clump of oregano. Scrubbed garden chair and have it ready to paint.

centralilrookie, Funny how those emotional days creep up and catch you by surprise. This month marked the fifth anniversary of my grandma's passing and the twenty-ninth anniversary of the passing of her mother, my great-grandmother. Both of these ladies meant a great deal to me and are in the most part responsible for my love of gardening. I guess the positive way to look at it is as long as we remember them, they will never truly be gone.

Went to garage sales yesterday, off and on all day since they didn't all start at the same time. The only real find was a brand new plant starting heat mat for $2.00! Found some decent paring knives, 2/$.25! They sharpened up nicely. A couple totes for storing empty fruit jars. A brand new still-had-tags shirt for DH.
Picked Elite Simpson lettuce, it's not bolting and hasn't turned bitter. Turned the compost in both bins. First picking of Provider bush beans and a handful of broccoli shoots. Cleaned and filled birdbaths again.
I made a discovery. Last week when I cleaned the grill innards, I noticed the grass where I did the job had died! I didn't use nasty grill/oven cleaner. I used Dawn Powerwash, which by the way, did a good job. I didn't figure Dawn would kill grass, never had the issue before with plain blue Dawn. Then I decided to spray some weeds in the stone walkway behind the garage. They were shriveling inside of a couple hours. I'll check them out again this morning. I never use weed killer, I usually pour boiling canning water on that walkway area.

Cloudy and muggy, 2 mile walk. Cut it short due to thunder. A few sprinkles. Nothing significant. Made huge omelets for breakfast. Went out later and trimmed bushes along the fence to make mowing easier. Then decided to mow. Started sprinkling again but mowed anyway. Rain lasted 5 minutes. Enough to keep me cool.

We spent the morning at our local farmers market, & once again my eyes were bigger than both my stomach & storage. Ended up with two homemade bagels & a loaf of crusty artisanal sourdough bread; 2 gold & 2 green zucchini; a big bunch of basil; a lovely bunch of red & gold Swiss chard; 2 large bulbs of fresh garlic; 2 tomatoes; a bag of mixed baby lettuces; green beans; 2 lovely broccoli crowns; 1 cucumber; & a bunch of lovely orange & yellow baby carrots. Oh - & the nice seafood guy was there, so we picked up a 1/2# of Wahoo & a 1/2# of Mahi-Mahi, which we'll be enjoying tonight in some fashion.
Rest of the day was spent cleaning out the fridge bins so I had room to store all of the above.

Harvested bundles of herbs, which are now hanging from the beam: thyme, greek oregano and tarragon. Dug up 2 sugar pie pumpkin starts to give to 2 neighbors, used the blower to move some of the remaining Siberian elm seeds into a corner. Helped hub repaIr a leak in a friend's hot tum pump. Didn't get to the garlic , as I had planned, but it has to be dug up tomorrow- they're predicting rains over the next few days.

I went to daughters while she was working and finished filling her hanging baskets and boxes. Newborn grandson just barely 3 mo has kept her busy. I had started flowers from seed for her but they weren’t filling out as expected. Found vinca vine w deep pink blooms and some portulaca to fill them out w very title upkeep. She was so happy and loved the flower choices. Then we brought lunch for son in law and gave him a worn out 2 yr old ready for nap 😁

The heavy rains Friday night were not what we really needed so yesterday morning found me digging an outlet trench for the water that had pooled near the pumpkins. I knew we needed to work on the problem area but over 5 inches of rain this last week really amplified the problem. With rains predicted everyday till Thursday the weeds will have a running start on me before it gets dry enough to till. Got a little work done on my truck then met up with sweetheart and 3 of my grandsons who had been helping her pack and move stuff from my house to hers. Pizza and a few games of darts and they are ready to help move furniture today. It was a good day

Finally decided to quit kicking myself because the garden hasn't went as planned this year and instead accomplish what I can during the rest of the growing season. Hooked soaker hose to the faucet to give peppers and tomatoes a good drink and used the water from the rain barrel for the rest of the garden. Managed to empty it which worked out pretty well as the kiddos pool water needed changed, so up early this morning to tackle that. Used the garden cart to wheel the buckets to the rain barrel which was much easier than lugging the buckets back and forth by hand. Starting to realize that I need to let go of my stubbornness and let common sense prevail when it comes to my back. One coat of enamel paint on garden chair yesterday and another this morning. Think it will need at least one more coat but I now remember why I hate working with oil-based paint--the clean-up takes as long as it does to paint. Have more containers to plant today and need to dig up the oregano in the old herb garden so I can dismantle the bed and pull up that wretched piece of carpeting I used to supress weeds when I built it. Yes it worked, but the plants can't penetrate it enough to get water and the bed is always dry.
Last evening I had one of those moments where grandma was with me. I was using the hose from the rain barrel to fill the watering cans and I have about enough time to empty one before the other is full. I stopped to pull a few small weeds and suddenly realized the other can was about to run over. About that time I heard grandma in my head telling me not to dilly-dally. She used to tell me this a lot when I was a kid as I always seemed to get sidetracked from the job at hand. Hadn't thought of or used that term in years.
