When I went out this morning to survey any damage from that wind last night (was supposed to rain hard, but only .13" came down, with all that wind and thunder), I discovered a few tomatoes that had parts of them blown down, but fortunately, not broken. These were large portions, not just a single section, so I gathered them together, and tied them to the trellis with that vinyl (or whatever it is) tape. I also discovered some bottle gourds formed, on the plants I have planted in the ground - I don't see any forming on the plants in the SIP, growing on the trellis. I did find at least a half dozen bitter melons starting out on that trellis, only about 1" long, so far. Here are two of the five bottle gourds I found, 2-3" long, so far. I did not hand pollinate any of those, like I usually do with the ones on the trellis. I'll find out if they grow well, or if I'm going to have to hand pollinate (the blossoms open at night, so bees don't help as much). When I harvest butternut squash blossoms, I find a lot of insects in them, so I'm hoping that they will be in these, too, being on the ground. emmsmommy it's actually an old blanket that got torn up and i couldn't use on my bed anymore. i didn't have any fabric paint or anything, so i just used a permanent sharpie. you can set sharpie ink in fabric with heat, like ironing it or throwing it in the dryer afterwards. i love punk/alt fashion because it's a lot of improvising and reusing old clothes to make something that looks original and really cool!

Went outside, and what did I see? Uprooted and on the ground, my Rome apple tree. Almost fifty years old, and has always been a very productive tree with lots of very tasty apples. Dog-gone it, we're going to miss it.

Uprooted and on the ground, my Rome apple tree. The fall of Rome, Apple edition. It might have been an "Empire".

That tree was legendary in the neighborhood as the biggest and best one around. We shared the bounty. gardendmpls, "The fall of Rome" is how I'll refer to it henceforth.

oh no Wheelgarden , What a loss. Is it because of too much rain? Something else? We have a huge old pear tree that is about 50 years old and very prolific. I call her the grandmother tree of the property.

OMG. I slept til 5:20 this morning. So walk was pushed back to 6:30. Then mowed yard when we got back and watered all pots. Then took off at 10 to meet retired friends group for lunch. Stopped at Hyvee grocery greenhouse. Found 4 pk veggies for $.25. Got broccoli and cauliflower. Just one pk of each. They look sad but will try to resuscitate them. Found spaces to tuck them in when I got home. Trimmed Baptisia bush. It was out of control. Garlic is looking close to harvest. Maybe 2 wks which is earlier than ever.

A long combination of things, desertwoman. It was in a lower-lying area, so it did get a lot of moisture. During our St. Patrick's Day Blizzard of 1993, it was blown over, almost uprooted, but my kind neighbors gently winched it back up and secured it. The tree kept thriving. About seven years ago it was ridiculously laden with fruit, then got smacked with a tropical system that blew through and was hit hard. Hung in there for a while, but finally succumbed under last night's high winds.

Garlic is looking close to harvest. Maybe 2 wks which is earlier than ever. I'm thinking the same with mine. We'll see!

Good Gawd Woman...this lazy boy is exhausted just reading your post. Cleaned the coop area and decided I would spread a little straw/chicken manure love around the herb garden I recently put in. Uh, didn't count on Miss Hazel wanting to snack on bird droppings...ugh. Scored a monster zuke and some cukes from a CG gardener I have stayed in touch with. Watered. Horse trading seeds with neighbors and other gardeners. Actually did some honest remote work for my job as well.

Finally gave in and went to chiropractor this morning. We usually talk gardening as he's very much into organics too but also gave me strict orders to take it easy for a few days. Had hubby stop at Wally World to see if I could find him a pair of cheap slip on shoes (which they were out of) and casually strolled through the garden center and ended up with pots and hanging baskets of impatiens, New Guinea impatiens, coleus and begonias for $1 and $2 each. Now I didn't really need any more plants but the $1 planters the impatiens were in was worth it alone. And yes, I was careful lifting them into the cart. So now my garden relaxation area will be well decorated.

I planted more marigolds this evening. They’ve been waiting , along with extra petunias, roses, dahlias, and zinnias.
I used some of the peach tree mulch around the marigolds. It was rained on and then got sun on it. And it’s smells so good.

Got trellises set up today around the fence. Stakes in the ground by the tomatoes. Will do the Florida weave once I get the jute or sisal twine. Started planting asparagus. Most directions say to prepare the bed and dig a trench to plant in. It would seem this would make a narrow bed with only one row (line?) of asparagus. In the place I planted, I made two rows of plants, although they don't mention two parallel trenches. Will see how this works. Tomorrow hope to put in more asparagus and also beans and strawberries. Then squash and okra plants I started a few weeks ago. Had to restart cucumbers as something had taken off the tops of these at the soil line in the six packs I planted. Threw a lot of iron phosphate slug and snail bait around and am hoping it was the slugs/snails and not a squirrel.

Yesterday started out in the usual good fashion with sweetheart on the hunt for a used bicycle and a late Father’s Day breakfast with her dad. Bicycle bought and breakfast enjoyed she then went to print our plane tickets for a planned trip to Florida in August. Long story short we got scammed by a third party vendor! Credit card cancellation, trip to the airport to talk to airline representative and a whole lot of stress really knocked the wind out of our sales for the rest of the day.
