What I planned to be a productive weekend didn't turn out like I'd anticipated. Hubby is doing great and has actually ditched the cane and crutches except for the steps. He did however get a painful toothache over the weekend and I took him to our regular doctor for antibiotic until we could find a new dentist. The doctor recommended a dentist in town and amazingly they had an opening for a consultation yesterday and off we went. What neither of us expected was for them to pull the tooth since it was so badly infected, but the dentist said that in this case it was necessary. So what little schoolwork we did yesterday was in the car.
I had planned to get all my brassica seed planted Saturday but was absolutely exhausted and did little but cook. Sunday we attempted getting caught up on schoolwork but my daughter got a little too interested in a painting project and we quit for a bath and cleaning of the dining room. That evening I finally got to the seeds and have the brassicas, peppers and even a few Roma tomatoes planted. It's a bit too early for the tomatoes and I wasn't planning to grow Romas but my daughter had ripped the packet in half and I figured they'd make a good experiment. I checked our last frost date and was a bit surprised to learn that it was only nine weeks away so I'll be busy, busy, busy starting more seeds and hopefully getting the coldframe and tiny greenhouse ready. Trying to get caught up on sleep, yet realizing that with the time change soon, I'll be able to putter around outside a bit in the mornings before my daughter wakes up.

Weekly grocery shopping today, which pretty much kills the day for anything else. But I did manage to get nearly everything on my weekly list, so that was a slam-dunk.

Well I lost my temper with the BOE today after the new speech therapist stood us up. My daughter hasn't had speech therapy in five weeks unless you count the fifteen minute Zoom session last week which kept freezing. I did get results though as my daughter is being reassigned to her former therapist with whom she was making so much progress.
See signs of lettuce and spinach sprouting already. I read that eggplant grew slowly like peppers and woke up determined to get them planted. Sorted the seeds out by when they needed planted and no eggplant seed to be found. Wondered if maybe I'd just though about it and not actually bought the seed but alas, they'd fallen in the floor. Cleaned a shelf off in the utility room, hooked up the LED shop lights I bought last week and moved the onions out there. My daughter and I took a walk and spent a few hours outside. She helped me pick up sticks in the yard and entertained the kittens we tamed down last year. I'm hoping she'll enjoy garden time with me this year.

Walked with The Princess twice today for a total of 4.75 miles. Felt good! Not much else going on yet.

Started cooking better than 4 gallons of frozen tomatoes in two crockpots on Monday. Finished them yesterday by adding onions, celery, peppers and diced carrots along with spices and a little sugar. About 6 quarts finished. Taste pretty darn good. I’m going to give my vegan future step daughter a good portion.

Started out the day transplanting peppers to their final pots. Started eggplant. Walked 3 miles late morning. Made cookies. Walked another 3 miles. Went and got ice cream treat for neighbor who is moving to assisted living this weekend. Had a nice visit. She can’t live alone since husband passed earlier this month. She gets frequent daily checks from son and me. And out of state daughter is there this week.
Our neighborhood is changing. House across street has been sold. One on corner is scheduled for tear down and rebuild of twin home. Now next door will be sold. It will feel odd.
Made appt for cataract consult next month. I’ve noticed my eyes get tired quickly and left one feels achy. It’s hard to stick to one task for long, like reading and sewing. I have to go to the big city for consult but surgery is done at hospital here. A mile from home.

Therapy day for my daughter. Her special needs therapist wanted me to see what she'd accomplished today and she had traced letters! I've never been able to get her to do that or write anything but scribbles. So proud of her! When we got back home and had lunch it was outside time again. She helped me clean part of the yard and was dirty from head to toe but had lots of fun!
Discovered the timer I plugged the new lights into doesn't work and the onion seedlings had light all night long. Will set an alarm to remind me to turn the lights on and off until I get another timer. Kolrabi, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower have all popped up. Checked out a wheelbarrow that hubby had in the junk pile and its salvageable. Needs new wooden supports, a new tire and a couple of washers where the bolts pulled through the tub but otherwise pretty solid. Chives are popping up outside and I'm reminded I have several to move that were in the coldframe before I moved it. Snow crocus and snowdrops are finally blooming.

Went to get a new solid tire that won't go flat and the price was almost that of a new wheelbarrow they had on sale. So, bought a new wheelbarrow with a solid tire already on it.

Today I replaced the drawer slides on one of my kitchen drawers, something that I did early on to 3 of them, so they would have full extension, and hold more weight (for those spice drawers). This wasn't really necessary, for the other drawers, but this one was loosening for the first time in 37 years (not bad, for cheap drawer slides!), so, instead of repairing it, I put a new, full extension slide in. I have so many of those things in all different sizes in my workshop, from when I bought a bunch from some places going out of business. For a spacer, I had to place some wood to just over 7/8" thick (of course, it wouldn't be simple, like 3/4" thick! lol), but that was no big deal. Getting it level inside the cabinet was the biggest pita, plus getting the screws in the slide in the cabinet, but that long reaching vise-grip clamp made this much easier, and those square drive screws - those things make things sooooooo much easier! I just throw those screws out for these slides, since I got a box of a thousand of the truss head square drives to use for these types of things about 30 years ago from Mc Feeley's - plus dozens of other sizes and types of square drive wood screws, and I rarely use any others. New full extension drawer slide in kitchen junk drawer. by pepperhead212, on Flickr Tonight, I went down to straighten up my workshop, after bringing all those things for several projects upstairs, and back down. I also cleaned out my garlic - only 4 bad heads, surprisingly, and still a lot of good ones. That Montana Giant is one I only grew a half pound of last season, but it did very well, and tasted very good, so I grew a good amount of what I harvested. And now I see it is storing very well, so that is a keeper - I'll have to order some, when I get my garlic "seed" for next season. I also trimmed my kaffir lime plants tonight (I should really do this in the light!), and, as usual, I'm probably throwing away more than I used since the last . But there are no small Asian grocers or restaurants to give them to around here, like I do with the epazote and curry leaves. But I have to do this now, as there are still 2 months before they go back outside. And then, another trimming! Trimmed kaffir lime branches, 3-3, still 2 months before going back outside. by pepperhead212, on Flickr

Went to get a new solid tire that won't go flat and the price was almost that of a new wheelbarrow they had on sale. So, bought a new wheelbarrow with a solid tire already on it. Hmm... solid tires are pricey, but may be able to get away with a new pneumatic tire and tube for around $15 though I do despise changing them. Right now a wheelbarrow isn't an absolute necessity but the tire would be the only out of pocket cost except for maybe some paint as I have everything else. Question is do I want to spend the $ on a solid tire for a used wheelbarrow that may have 3-4 years of life in it?

do I want to spend the $ on a solid tire for a used wheelbarrow that may have 3-4 years of life in it? Depends on how much you hate changing the tire, if it goes flat, which it may not. When the wheelbarrow is almost defunct, buy a new one with a solid tire when they have them on sale.

Potted up most of the remaining peppers this morning, along with Lupine, Coleus and lemongrass. There is a bunch of celery I need to do something with, on the fence about tossing them or potting them up. Not many people want to buy celery plants, they are needy.....need daily water and tying later on.
