Took the day off and enjoyed Lasagne dinner at my parent's house that we postponed last weekend because of the weather. I did both my parents and my aunt's taxes as I figured it best to tackle them and get them out of the way. We are off early in the morning to get all of the pre-op stuff taken care of and I'm seriously thinking of picking up a couple of LED shop lights as I'm going to be very busy starting seedlings soon. Need to inventory the groceries and stock up as well. Hubby still having trouble with his arm with the torn muscle and has the follow-up on that Tuesday. Still need to move a few things out of the entry including the piano bench I thought would be great to sit on while putting on shoes. Honestly I don't think we've ever used it for that purpose and it tends to collect junk. Also found a listing for greenhouse pots and starters on marketplace and waiting for the reply. I recognize the background pictures of a place I used to work for and know they always bought in bulk so hopefully the prices are good.

Wife and I went and got our initial Pfizer vaccination at the local mall this morning. Went pretty smoothly, having to wait about an hour for the lines of cars to shrink down. Temperature at 7am was already 40 degrees and at 2pm it was over 65. Finally got a chance to add some water to the koi pond and do a partial water change. Snow is almost gone...what a turnaround from last Monday's 20 below zero weather! But Winter returns on Wednesday...

Did our weekly grocery shopping this morning. One good thing about it being both a Monday & and ice storm is that we were two of maybe only six people in both of the stores we visited - lol!

Dragged the magnet sweep along the house, picking up stray nails and fasteners from the porch project. Got a good panful of them, the better to not spike my chair tires.
Happiness is: Your ninety-year old Mom calling to talk gardening and what new things we're planting. I like to think that I'd have probably come to organic gardening sooner or later, but she and my late Dad made sure I knew it from early on. My kids know it too. Happy --- no, thrilled! --- I am.

Hubby's pre-op trip didn't go as planned. His blood pressure was sky high and though some could be attributed to pain, the anesthesiologist said unless it was significantly lower by Friday, surgery would be postponed. Admissions nurse suggested the ER but I mentioned that the heart clinic was upstairs and although his cardiologist is only there once a month, they would have his records and possibly could see him. Thankfully the cardiologist there was willing to see him and consult with his regular cardiologist and increased one medicine and added a new medicine too. By evening it had went down significantly and keeping our fingers crossed that it stays down. It was quite a scare for hubby and he's vowed to eat better and get healthier as he's been picking up too much junk food when he get the animal feed.

Loving the weather. We walked 2.4 miles yesterday, outside! Cleaned off the deck again. Gave onions haircut #4 this morning. Should I be saving some of the "hair" in my scrapbook? Lupine is sprouting. Red coleus is too.

By evening it had went down significantly and keeping our fingers crossed that it stays down. It was quite a scare for hubby and he's vowed to eat better and get healthier as he's been picking up too much junk food when he get the animal feed. I can SO relate to this in a way. Mr. Breezy hadn't been to a doctor in a dog's age, but when we were sinking post holes for our farm fencing 20 years ago or so, he nearly severed one of his fingers when the guide pole on the tractor hit it. Took him to the ER, & they were less concerned about his finger than they were about his blood pressure. After several tests, his blood pressure was not only sky high, but it apparently had been so for many years - enough years to where it had started thickening his heart walls & they said he could easily have been dead within just a couple of years. He's now on daily meds & now DOES visit his doctor twice a year, & has now been predicted very healthy, but it took this accident to make him pay more attention to this health. While he hasn't eaten any red meat or red meat products since he was 15 years old, that apparently wasn't enough of a save to protect him. Regardless of how you feel about doctors & meds, people - don't wait. Just an initial workup can reveal underlying stuff that could save your life. My husband's father died at 50 from a stroke, mother at 60 from cancer, & sister from a stroke just a couple of years ago. He has so far outlived them all because he's started taking checkups & meds seriously.

Just an initial workup can reveal underlying stuff that could save your life I am another believer, having had a cardiac "event" twelve years ago. The cause was your typical combination of eating junk food, being overweight, not exercising, and smoking. They put in two stents, prescribed BP/Cholesterol medication and exercise. That would have been discovered long ago had I gone to a doctor on a regular basis. Losing 25 lbs. brought the BP down a lot, exercise is helping A1C and Cholesterol but there is something else I want to try. A few weeks ago I watched a documentary where six people went from what they normally ate to a vegetarian (maybe vegan) diet for a one-month period. At the end of one month, cholesterol and BP for all participants was down a lot. I'm leaning toward plant-based as opposed to vegan or vegetarian. It's going to take some work because I have to learn how to cook that way but I am also expecting some good results.

martywny , I went on the whole foods/plant based diet over 2 years ago. I lost 12 lbs the first 2 months and wasn't even trying to lose any weight. But I'm not complaining! I do eat salmon or some kind of fish once or twice a week though at first I didn't. I feel awesome and within a couple weeks noticed even more energy than normal, it was like I had 2 batteries instead of one. It's a satisfying diet since you can eat as much as you want without guilt. It's easy once you get the hang of it. I also cut out dairy but after a while added some back in the way of yogurt 2-3 times a week. And I do eat eggs. There is a new term, "Flexitarian". A vegetarian who occasionally eats an animal based protein. There are some good documentaries on Netflix about the plant based thing. One that comes to mind is "Fork Over Knife." I watched them all. I would never do vegan or strictly vegetarian. I do allow myself one meal a week to eat off the diet. That's usually Sunday morning breakfast or the rare occasion we go out. And psyllium husk (Metamucil or equivalent) is good for reducing cholesterol. It can be powder, capsules or gummies. There are lots of them out there but not all are a psyllium based product. Dr. thought my cholesterol was a tad high, so instead of meds I take the psyllium and trimmed 20 points off the cholesterol, but that was only taking one dose a day. Apparently for cholesterol it's to be taken 2-3 times a day. I'm good with one dose. Plus walking keeps A1C in check. My opthalmologist said that walking 30 minutes at least 5 times a week helps the A1C and is all I need. I laughed at her. How about 3 miles every day? And I think of the people on some island that live to be 100 or more. They eat high carbs and low protein. The exact opposite of the American diet. Go for it!

42˚! Went for 2 walks today for a total of 4 miles. The streets are slushy and it's melting fast.

I would never do vegan or strictly vegetarian. Same here, would like to be mostly plant-based with some chicken or salmon every now and then. I will be so glad when I can take longer walks again, our bike path has been difficult to access because of the snow so the pooch and I have been keeping it short. Thanks for all that good info!

I'm also primarily a plant based eater and always a whole foods, whole grains eater. One of the important things to know is that sugar, refined white flour, white rice, etc raises inflammation- a huge contributor to heart disease and other diseases.Stress increases inflammation, too. Just for clarification- a vegetarian does not eat meat but does eat other animal foods: eggs and dairy (cheese, yougurt, butter, etc) A vegan is strictly plant based- no animal foods of any kind. I like that new term 'Flexitarian' Mumsey , That's exactly what I am and have been for over 45 years. My diet is plant based, but I will eat salmon and other fish and a tiny bit of chicken breast now and then. Also occasionally drink keifer (like yogurt). I bake with hemp milk(it's creamier than other plant milks) and add it with my oatmeal; use a rice milk based mozzarella style cheese for anything I would want cheese for (it melts really well), cashew milk frozen dessert for when I have a hankering for ice cream, have found a really tasty plant based' cream cheese' and 'sour cream'. The products have gotten so much better and tastier in recent years, compared to 10-20-40 years ago, since plant based diets have become more popular. The secret, martywny , is not to compare the plant based products to their animal based counterparts. Let them stand on their own and enjoy them for what they are. I'm with mumsey- Go for it! You will be amazed at how good you feel. I don't eat this way to live forever.I do it to have energy and stamina to do the things I love. I will be 73 this Spring and I run circles around friends and family 10- 30 years younger! and lastly, I live by the motto: Everything in moderation, including moderation!. Sometimes you just have to kick it out! Just not very often

My hubby had what should have been a life-altering event ten years ago when he had a quadruple bypass. I changed my eating habits too and even lost fifty pounds though I've put about twenty of it back on. He has gained everything back and then some. He's also a type-2 diabetic which ironically we discovered the same day I discovered I was pregnant and once again changed his eating habits for a while. The thing is he's a food addict. I somewhat place the blame with his parents who saw no problem with him being 98 pounds in the first grade, though he was a head taller than his classmates. They simply described him as a "healthy boy." His meals prior to when we started dated consisted of whatever canned and boxed meals his mom left for him before she went to work. He had very little self-esteem from years of living with an alcoholic and constantly being put down. While he's made significant changes in confidence, food is still his weakness as he's back to sneaking home what I call "crap food" every chance he gets. I've tried reverse psychology, I've begged, I've pleaded, I've been blunt, nothing has worked. He finally admitted that he regrets not taking care of himself for so long as the health problems are really starting to compound. All I can do is move the junk out of the house and encourage him to eat healthier. The rest is up to him.

Wife and I grabbed snow shovels and went out and shoveled about 3 inches of partly cloudy off the drive and walks. 26 degrees, overcast, calm. It is a beautiful day! Red-winged blackbirds are singing. Go check the rain gauge. 0.08 inch. Furnace comes on. I am sure thankful for that appliance and the utilities to make it run. I can remember choppin kindkins and hauling coal in a bucket.
