Hubby and I have been working on pruning and clearing some of the excessive plant growth produced by our little corner of the world. The walking path was made wider. The growth at the sides of the path was trying to over take the mowed path. Walnut trees go from being a sprout to towering over our head...seemingly overnight. Darned squirrels.
Mulberry trees sprout in areas that are hard to reach. If I get them early, the weed whacker can do the job. So much easier than getting out the loppers.
So, I have a trailer load of tree chippings from an unidentified tree. It blooms white intensely fragrant blossoms in the spring. The bloom resembles a small white wisteria in shape.
The chips from that tree are very fragrant. I would describe the scent as a combo of almond extract with a touch of vanilla. I need to figure out the identity of this tree before I use those chips.

Feeling better, just have some aching in jaw when I do too much bending over. The dentist did some serious pulling, digging, etc. She had to stabilize my lower jaw when doing all the prodding. Glad it's over though.

We made plans yesterday to go get subs, then head to a nearby State Park for an impromptu picnic. Stopped at Subway, parking lot busy. Through the window I see lots of people practically on top of each other and not a mask in sight. Told DH that I wasn't about to go in there. So we headed to the next town. They have Casey's there, hardly anyone in the store. Got subs there. Way better than Subway any day, and less expensive. Went to the park, sat on a shady hill overlooking the lake and had our picnic. Nice breeze, it almost felt chilly!
Came home and rested on the deck the rest of the day.

Yesterday I finally set the rainbarrel set back up and planted some caladiums in pots. Divided the gladiolus to go into five large pots and will need to get a bag of potting mix before I can plant them. The cutting of Persian shield I took a few weeks ago have all rooted. That's definitely a success as I could never get them to root before. Spied a few tiny green beans on the Provider and Tenderette plants.

It's very cool this morning. Worked in garden already this morning, cleaned up a lot. Transplanted 32 kohlrabi in the shade of other things. And 6 Little Gem. Pulled a few carrots and got a few broccoli side shoots. After last night's rain the soil is very workable. Noticed yellow crookneck coming up, planted Saturday from seed. Silver Bell squash is climbing the fence and I see a couple squash forming. Picked first Sprite tomatoes!
Yesterday, every time I went to the garden a whole flock of sparrows flew up from the garden. I hope they are eating all the bad stuff.

Likely rolling in the dust and fluffing their feathers. They do this to get rid of the lil critters (lice, mites) that may be on their bodies.

What dust? The entire garden is covered with grass and/or straw. Maybe they like that too.

Went back to work after a weeks vacation. Well, if you don't take vacations you won't be disappointed. On the other hand, decompression/vacation/whatever is important. Sometimes weekends just aren't enough.

What a day, what a day. Had one important errand today, so since we'd be going north, decided to kill a few birds with one stone.
First stopped at a specialty compounding pharmacy in Fairfax, VA, & picked up our dog's special prescription which we can't get locally, & then went on a merry convoluted chase through Georgetown & other D.C. environs because the GPS voice kept sending us to exits & streets that were either unmarked or didn't exist. But it was nice driving through all those old neighborhoods with all those old distinguished brick townhouses, embassies, & monuments. And it's all SO clean - nothing like equivalent neighborhoods in NYC. Finally found the combo liquor store & gourmet shop that I had ordered two cases of our favorite bubbly from yesterday (they had it for $10 less PER BOTTLE - Yay!!), we parked in a numbered space, called the store, & a nice masked gentleman brought the cases out to us & put them in the car. I had left him a tip when I paid for the order online yesterday, so we didn't have to interact outside of thanking him. I wish I had been able to go inside the store, as the signs painted on the side of the building stated that they had real N.Y. bagels, over 300 cheeses, deli meats, crackers, etc., etc. My kind of store. Last stop on the way home was our Maine fish guy who maintains a retail store near Dulles airport in Chantilly, where I picked up a nice thick pound of fresh-cut swordfish steak that I ordered this morning & that I'll grill outside tonight. Am thinking of some extra-virgin-olive-oil dressed pasta tossed with my homegrown cherry tomatoes & maybe some French green beans on the side. Maybe a salad as well.
So a long day, but at least relatively safe shopping.

The last two days have been pretty productive. Yesterday I moved the backyard, emptied and refilled the wading pool, took cuttings of one of the old roses, a double roses of Sharon and a blueberry, pruned the determinate tomatoes, put tomato suckers in water to root, weaved another row of support twine around the Romas and turned two of the compost piles
Today we took a road trip and I picked up a few bags of potting mix, divided the gladiolus between five large pots, potted up two more pots of caladiums and tied the tomato plants again. We've also made the decision to opt for virtual learning this fall for our daughter and I'm pushing the market garden plans back a bit. Still planning on building the greenhouse and will likely lean toward selling vegetable plants versus produce next year.

I just fixed a hole, where the air gets out And set my butt to wondering --- where it wil go... But it really doesn't matter quite that much tonight With a bowl of blueberries is right where I belong!
