Quinn and I worked the last section of native grass and got the bindweed cut and elms sprouts pulled and grass mowed. Also weed whacked and cleaned up a parking area in prep for guests coming for the annual feast. I'm beat. My hands are sore. Grabbed a goats head that is going to seed. Ouch!

Spent the morning grocery shopping - mostly for our grilled chicken bbq tomorrow. The stores had been appropriately ravaged, but I did manage to get everything on my list. Also snagged a lovely fresh (& surprisingly WATERED) little olive tree at Aldi. Has lots of new growth. The first one I purchased there a couple of years ago had to be coaxed back from the grave. Our Aldi is not known for keeping their live plants in decent condition. If you don't get there on the day they're delivered or soon thereafter, don't bother. But this one is very nice. I was thinking of trying to turn my older one into a bonsai, but first wanted a backup. Now I have the chance.

Finally some measurable rain. Total of 1" since last evening and I was out playing in it this morning and managed to fill one of the 55-gallon rain barrels completely up. Of course I'm sure by back and shoulders will ache tomorrow as I've definitely lost some muscle strength this year. Harvested five cucumbers so far and vines are still doing great. Maybe it was hiding them amongst the bean vines that did the trick. Potted up the majority of the smaller geraniums Saturday and will hopefully get the rest of them next week. I'm finally going to cave in and go back to the doctor next week for my ankles. I've been trying to do things smarter and sit whenever I can in the garden but still having lots of trouble.
Tomorrow we are going to my parents and it will only be the five of us as my aunt isn't coming this time. Having the traditional hamburgers and hotdogs along with some fresh green beans I'm sure. I'll probably take some of the trial peppers along so mom and I can do some taste tests too. The Corbaci peppers are going absolutely crazy and I definitely need to pick several of them as the plants are leaning from the weight.

Had a fairly relaxing day. Talked with my sis on Facetime. Then went outside and got the last of the Russian sage cut back to soil level- just an hour or so. Out for a late lunch/early dinner for New Mexican food, before meeting with our neighborhood gang for our weekly Happy Hour. Did first of month bookkeeping and bill paying tonight.

Went fishing yesterday morning. We kept 7, pretty decent size bass. Several we released. Dad thought he was up to cleaning them, so left the fish and that task to him! It was a perfect day, cool and sunny with light North breeze. Went to the gardens, brother talked me into taking all the tomatoes and cukes to make salsa and pickles for him. Before leaving I did a quick check of all their dr. appts. Asked step mom when her neurologist appt was, she didn't have a clue. It's 9-12, Dad's is 9-9. I'll be calling them tomorrow to get both appts on the same day. Glad I checked that out.
When I got home I put 2 dutch oven pans of salsa on to cook down. Let it sit all night, now working on getting the first batch in the canner. Planning to make lentil/taco stuffed peppers and cole slaw for lunch today. DS loves that stuff.

Nothing garden related today. We did a thorough house clean today. sprucing up for the Feast on Sunday. The hard yard cleanup is completed for now so I can putter in the gardens all week. I like the puttering phases.

No gardening today. Slow morning and then spent way too long grocery shopping in town. I was frazzled when I got home. Sat under a ponderosa pine drank a glass of herbal ice tea. That helped a lot.

16 pints of salsa done on Monday. Yesterday 7 qts of spicy dill pickles and 8 pints salsa for brother. Then I got 2 pots of tomatoes cooked down for juice. I'll can that this morning. More garden clean up this afternoon.
Monday DS was here. We got trees trimmed, at the expense of the telescoping tree pruner. It's now toast, bent all to heck. It was old anyway. Yard mowed, 2 trips to the tree dump for wood chips, got those all spread. Some items put up in top of garage. For eats we had taco stuffed peppers and coleslaw. We got done in 3 hours what would have taken me 2 days! DS went garden shopping and basement shopping for goodies to take home. It was a good day.

Labor Day was pretty slow-paced as we ate our goodies and enjoyed temps in the 70s. Got kiddo interested in playing ball so outside most of the day. Harvested a new variety of cut short beans from the new garden and took them along for a taste test among the bean aficionados (my parents) and they really liked the flavor, so will definitely be growing more of them next year.
Yesterday I was determined to get the flattened ends of the greenhouse ribs cut off and managed to do it in approximately 90 minutes. Most of that time was spent measuring and moving each one in preparation for cutting. Picked some dry bean pods from one patch in the new garden and some Trionfo Violetto from the arch and fixed them for supper. Decided I needed a place to sit and relax (yeah, right) while I'm out there and made a temporary bench out of a couple of unused 12" concrete blocks and a 2 x 6 and it serves the purpose.

Such a beautiful day today, that I had a hard time getting started. I wanted to just sit on the deck and absorb the sun and warmth. So I did for a little while. When I came in the house to look for something in the upstairs closet, it started that trip down the rabbit hole. Started going thru a box with tablecloths. These are vintage tablecloths my EX MIL gave me years ago. 5 of them I think, all with matching napkins. Put them on the side to go to thrift store. Then all the holiday tablecloths, then a bunch of old curtains. Then I came across a bag that had my mothers handwriting on it. It was a bag of wool material with the little paper receipt still pinned on one of the rolls. My mom was a big sewer back in the day. Not sure what I'm going to do with the material. Anyway, totally forgot what I went upstairs in the closet for, but I'm getting rid of a few things that are just taking up space.
After lunch, I headed to the garden and did some clean up. Pulled a bunch of dead borage and pulled out one of the sunflowers. The birds had picked it clean already. Picked and watered the green beans. Cut some parsley and threw it in the dehydrator. Now I'm back to sitting and enjoying the warm late summer day.

The rental house in Tucson FINALLY listed and is now being handled by a property management group. This has freed up oodles of time for your truly. Anxious to get to the CG plot, but temps are ramping up this week...not anxious for a bout of heat exhaustion though. Started some bok choy, broccoli and kale indoors.

Yesterday was mostly a day of checking and rechecking PTO finances as we have an audit this morning. I do make it out to harvest a few more paste tomatoes and some dried beans pods but that was about it. Was hoping hubby could help me try and straighten two of the greenhouse ribs but he's been working constantly since the temps have been in a more normal range. He's taking off today to mow and restock inventory and of course I'll be gone most of the day.
Temps have been dropping into the mid-40s at night and it's actually refreshing as I've been keeping the windows open. One of the trial beans just started blooming last week and a whole three months since I planted them so fingers crossed I get a few harvests and hopefully a few for seed before frost hits. The tiny beans are forming, so we shall see. The paste tomatoes share the same bed and they've went absolutely crazy despite the drought. Other than when they were getting established, I only watered them one time during the drought and yet the plants are lush and green whereas others shriveled up and died. Could it be the new bed or the fact that the foliage has kept the bed shaded? Two bags of tomatoes in the freezer and looks like I'm going to have a bumper harvest over the weekend.

Decided to drive by the falls today while we were in the area. This is pretty much how all the bodies of water look around here.

Somewhat busy somewhat good day today. Spent the morning at UVA Charlottesville in a followup neurological exam/visit to an ER visit there back in June. Pretty much okay. Have somewhat normal for-my-age areas in my brain not receiving blood, but at least I know there's something up there - lol! Docs said to continue to keep any eye on my everyday feelings, but no need to lie awake at night.
Afterwards visit to Trader Joe's along with our most-favorite Szechuan restaurant down there - "Peter Chang's" - for a delicious takeout dinner made it an "all right in the world" day after all.
