Yesterday morning I got sweetheart off to work then waited for Menards and Tractor Supply to open to pick up a few things. Finished getting the barn wall covered then got things prepped for the girl that’s going to take care of the animals while we are away.
This morning sweetheart was planning to get up at 3:15 but lo and behold I woke at 2:30 and decided we might as get up and get moving. We arrived at Lurie Children’s Hospital about 7am. 😂 At least we missed a major part of the morning rush hour traffic!

The plan was to follow the shade today and get more gardens clean up done. I was going to work around 2 Facetime calls with out of state clients. Went out late morning and put in the first hour or so before call #1. Ate lunch and then had call #2 when a thunderstorm moved in and continued with hard rain to drizzle to hard rain, off and on all afternoon. That put an end to following the shade... best laid plans.... Ended up doing first of month book keeping, bill paying, etc instead. But what a treat to have the windows and doors open with cool breezes and the smells and sounds of rain. I love rainy days- so rare here that we enthusiastically welcome them

Yesterday started out with walk and tomato picking. Picked the first Black Beauty tomato, though only the tops seem to be black, the rest is green. The one I picked was turning pink on the bottom.
At 0830 headed to Dad's for another day of appts. Got Dad to his, got cath removed, he is able to urinate on his own. It was quick, was only there 30 minutes!! Lab report was good, very low grade cancer that had not invaded any other tissue, return for check up in 6 months. Then took him home, had lunch and then step mom and I headed out to her eye appt. First went and did her weekly grocery shopping. Spent 3 hours at eye dr. She hadn't had a check up in 10 years. I was totally unaware of that. Her vision is very poor, hard to believe she was functioning as well as she is. Test after test after test....scans included. Final diagnosis, dry AMD. Got new lens prescription which will help but definitely no where near 20/20. Now to research AREDS supplements, specifically for dry AMD. There is no cure, just supplements that may or may not slow progression. Called neighbor at 2 pm to have her let Princess out. I finally got home at 5:15.
I am staying home the next 3 days.

Slow day yesterday though we did avoid rain except for a few sprinkles. Both stores within view of where we were selling said their sales were way down considering it was the first of the month. We did okay but not what the first day usually brings in. I decided to take the pair of capris that's been in the fixit pile since last year and at least baste them to be patched. Well that turned into a bit of slow stitching and I'm still working on it this morning. Went to a sale at a community building nearby and found kiddo a few babies I knew she'd love, a few pouches, a pot of hens and chicks and a Christmas cactus for me. Also returned later and bought hot dogs for supper.
Rain chances are high today, it's windy and hubby overdid it yesterday so we're taking today off. I'm hoping there's a bit of capturing rain water today.

Long day at the hospital yesterday with the surgery in the afternoon. The doctors seem very pleased with the way things went now it’s just the recovery to worry about. There has been some type of fluid leakage that they had to contend with but not alarming.
At home the fence man came and repaired the damage from the lady running hitting it earlier this year and we had hay delivered that is stacked in front of the wall that I covered. Grandson came over and hung out with Ruby for the afternoon and a nurse friend of sweetheart’s, who stays at our house a couple of nights each week, did the chores. Looking forward to heading home later this afternoon, seeing Ruby and taking a nap in my recliner. As Dorthy said “there’s no place like home”
Thank you for your concern and support…..

A varied day. Saw 2 clients at the office, picked up a few things at the grocery store, 2 loaves of crusty ww bread at the bakery. Came home and hand watered the wild strawberry patch, then cleaned up the garlic that had been curing under the carport, separated the cloves for planting, (98!!) and brought it into the house. It's sitting on the dining table until we get home.
We're leaving very early tomorrow (Saturday) morning on a short road trip to celebrate my sister's 75th birthday. We're all gathering at her husband's sister's house, 5 hours away. in Colorado. So had to get ready to be away 3 days. Then packed my baggalinni (large tote- I travel light most times), made breakfast burritos for the road, some guacamole to eat with chips for a snack. Will pack the cooler in the morning. A few nights ago I made a pot of sauce with sausage and meatballs and a very large pan of lasagna for Sunday's dinner, and froze it. All we'll have to do is reheat in the oven, make a salad and garlic bread. Easy peasy. And a small crowd is served.

Picked 2 gallons green beans yesterday. Froze them. Then started garden cleanup. Cut some overgrown things down and discarded. Got all the onions and shallots out and into the garage, spread out to dry on newspaper. I cut the tops back to about 8". Saves a lot of space and they seem to dry OK that way. Planning to put cukes in one empty space and yellow crookneck in the other, gotta get it done today along with mowing back yard.
It sure is getting light later in the morning, nearly 0600 before we can walk.

Hubby started feeling better and weather cleared up so we went to sell around 11:00 yesterday. Mom was to originally keep kiddo and when I messaged her she was at the vet with one of the cats and swung by on her way home and picked her up. Sales were still not as expected and we had one ten-minute shower to contend with which wouldn't have been bad if we hadn't gotten gotten the plastic twisted when we laid it out in advance just-in-case. Mom had beans and cornbread waiting when we got there and kiddo decided she wanted to spend the night.
The rain catchment tub was only 3/4 full when I checked it last evening and was completely full this morning. Rain gauge measured 3/8" total. Decided to haul a tub of water to the rain barrel with disastrous results. I'd removed the back panel from the cart yesterday morning to move the wicking planter with Carolina Reapers to the back deck as they're budding to bloom and I didn't want them in close proximity to my sweet peppers. In hindsight I should have put that panel back on but the path to the rain barrel was pretty even... At least I lost it right at the garden gate, so hopefully plants in the ends of the first two beds benefit. Mental note: be fully awake before operating cart hauling water. Sprinkling now and day is a bit up in the air. If we don't sell, we'll let kiddo have a Granny and Grandpa day and go down and get her later this afternoon.
Oh and my shopping has been limited to two organizational sales and other than the two plants and hot dogs, I've spent $5 on kiddo including a fill-a-bag sale on clothes for $1. I almost caved at the metal tractor seat for $20 but it would have been a garden ornament and I'm trying to restrain my garden purchases to necessities until the greenhouses are built.

Garden has kinda been neglected lately due to the heat, mosquito's and other stuff. So this morning I figured it was going to be the day. I sprayed myself up with bug spray, put my wide brimmed hat on and got to work. Tackled the cabbage patch first. Because it's covered, the weeds have taken over. Pulled weeds and 4 of the cabbage. Kept two and the other two went to the chickens. There are 4 left out there that are getting to be a nice size. I see coleslaw in my future. Cut down a lot of the phlox, pulled out another tomato plant, pulled weeds in the beet bed. With practically everything covered in the garden, weeds are not getting pulled as usual. Rabbit is still there, saw it run out of the flower bed across to the other side of the garden. Chickens got at least 4 buckets of weeds to scratch thru.
Came up to the deck and pulled the potted cucumbers out. They weren't very productive and the leaves were starting to turn yellow, so out they went. Watered the pots on the deck. Went back out to the garden and picked a few tomatoes and a cucumber. Need to pick the few beans I saw, but between the bug spray, sunscreen, and sweat, I couldn't stand myself anymore and took a shower.

After a full morning of farmers' market & grocery shopping, Mr. Breezy & I picked all the ripe/almost ripe deck tomatoes since we had a rather grim forecast of severe thunderstorms with strong winds & flooding rains. . . . which never happened. We ended up with dark skies, a few thunder rumbles, & a sprinkle. So I now have pounds of tomatoes sitting on my counter awaiting preparation before the fruit flies find them. And of course I didn't water today.
I'm now going to put a contract out on the "Wunderground" weather website, as well as the local WTOP radio weather people.

Visited with my conspiracy theory neighbor to discuss use of his raised beds. Requests that no nightshades be planted, yet wants peppers?!?! Neighbor was pleased that I had set up a rotary composter and offered up his green waste to add to it. Apparently he has been lobbying local authorities for ten years or so to separate green waste from household trash and/or promote green waste recycling. Watered early just to ensure that the afternoon monsoon rain would make that unnecessary. So far, the latest round of seedlings have survived the local critterdom. Swept up another battlefield of deceased beetles and an unfortunate lizard. Builds character they say. Cukes, sweet potatoes, peppers and herbs are still doing ok. Filling the 2' x 4' raised bed tomorrow before the temps rise to incineration levels. Still, I do love it here.

Nothing garden related. Took a short road trip (5 hours) and started celebrating my sister's 75th birthday with her two sons and partners + 2 grandkids, 50+years family friends with their grown son and DIL with their 3 kids and the hosts. It was a mini family reunion. I ate foods I never eat, harkening back 40-50 years, and feeling overstuffed and a little woozy right now...
To be continued tomorrow. However, I made dinner for tomorrow night and brought it, frozen: a healthy version of my mom's lasagna (I make it with brown rice lasagna pasta and add spinach in the layers). At home I use plant based ricotta made with almond milk- excellent- but opted for cows milk ricotta for this gang.
