The last 2 days have been a blur. Yesterday went to Dad's and tried to show step mom how to empty Cath bag. Impossible. Brother will be there the weekend to help. While I was there I offered to help freeze kale. So went to the garden and got 2 five gallon bucket fulls of the stuff. I had taken along Instant pot to do the blanching and that was a good thing. Dad was watching us and then trying to supervise, so I put the blanched kale in front of him with freezer bags and had him fill the bags to HIS liking. We got 10 bags from the 2 buckets. Headed home at 1 pm and took a nap!!! Then went to the garden and dug volunteer potatoes that were in the way of picking tomatoes along the fence line.

Had a call from a strange cell number and started not to answer but it was local so I did. It was a lady saying she was looking for my mother because she'd found her wallet in the middle of the road. I got her location and attempted to contact my mom to no avail. Tried contacting my aunt who was only a mile away from where the woman was but no luck there either. Was about to call my mother-in-law to see if she could come get me so I could go meet this lady when mom finally messaged me. Short story: wallet is safe and back with my mom with all contents.
So thankful for honest people in the world!

I did pretty much nothing yesterday except pick beans, ripped out most of the bolting lettuce and planted the rest of the broccoli seedlings. Also cut a Red Kuri squash out of the chain link fence, it was growing INTO the fence and no way it would be salvaged when mature. Today I'm mowing the back yard, this week is going to be high heat index every day.

It rained and rained and rained last night for about 2 hours, buckets of it. Nearly 2". Today is like a sauna, hardly any breeze moving. Picked beans, they weren't quite dry but picked what I could without disturbing them too much. Went out later and picked again when things were finally dry. Got a total of 2.5 ice cream buckets full. Will take those to Dad's, step mom will freeze them. Their beans are not looking good. Mowed the front yard after 4 pm, still hot. Drank a ton of water with 4 water breaks. Then went to the tree dump and discarded zinnias that had fallen over in the rain and all the potato vines from the other day. 3 giant sunflowers had fallen over, but still in the ground, so tied those up to the fence. I've been checking on Dad daily via brother and phone. He's doing well and drinking lots of fluids. We have a plan now where brother empties the cath bag in the am before work and again when he gets home. Works well. I'll go there tomorrow to take beans, then Thursday to the dr for follow-up surgical appt. Lots to do before trip with DS, we leave the 7th. Looking forward to time away from everything. Sis and neighbor lined up to take care of Princess, so all good there. Just hoping I pack everything right and our security check is smooth. Been watching youtube videos. DS dropped the idea of TSA pre check on me last night. Looking into that, though it would have been nice to know about it a month ago. Darn Millenials, nothing is done with much warning........but he seems to function that way.............

Mumsey, we got that rain overnight…I was hoping for a 2 inch rain, but hubby dumped 8/10”. The roar of rainfall on the roof was loud…I thought for sure we had more. I think we’re supposed to get more overnight. Baby beans liked it. Collards liked it. Dahlias liked it. And, the rain barrel is full again.

Got home yesterday from out of town weekend wedding. Wedding was beautiful, we had a lot of fun. Went out to the garden and picked a basket full of tomatoes. The plants look terrible. All the lower leaves are either gone or yellow with blight. Second planting of green beans look good. Actually got a few from the 3 bushes the rabbits didn't chew all the way down. Mosquito's are horrible. Couldn't spend a lot of time out there. Rained early then it cleared up enough to pic more tomatoes. Made some Pico de Gallo with some of the tomatoes and peppers. So good and fresh tasting.

Didn't do much garden related today. Tied off a small tree that the winds had adjusted to almost 45 degrees, read and re-read what the AZ Ag Extension folks say I can do, received the Epazote seeds from pepperhead in the mail today (Wohoo!) and mourned the loss of two squash seedlings to unknown critters. On the bright side, the ancho/poblano is doing well, as are the sweet potatoes, cucumbers and herbs.

The weeds are very happy. It doesn't take much rain to sprout weed seeds. Today was another day of whittling away at the abundance. I leave some , as they are really beautiful wild flowers, but there are plenty where I don't want them to be.

Went out in the afternoon to feed the chickens and collect eggs. Then hammered the posts and stapled the new trellis mesh for the beans and cukes. Planted six or seven varieties of pink eyed, purple hulled southern peas (beans really) by the tomatoes. I love saying that name with a Southern accent. While I was planting a wind blew up and I heard the soft whoosh of an Ailanthus tree biting the dust. It wasn't by the fence last year and it had popped up and grown what looked to be 18 feet this year. I had tried to cut it with a large pruning shears two weeks ago, but its trunk was a little too big for the pruner. Went and picked up a tree saw, but it disappeared before I could use it. I guess the cut I had made was deep enough to expand when the wind appeared. Fell perfectly, missing the trellis and landing between the fence and the chicken pen. As I cut off the branches with the pruner, I noticed the tree was covered in lantern flies in all stages. Spent a half hour picking them off and feeding them to the chickens through the pen wire. Got pretty good at grabbing them off the leaves and stems. They are leaf hoppers and if you put a hand in front of them and one behind, they land smack on your hand. Chickens really enjoyed.

Dentist appointment for kiddo yesterday and she did great except they still couldn't get an X-ray. She was willing, but as soon as they put the shield(?) in her mouth for her to bite down on she started gagging. Went to the Chinese buffet afterwards and mom, kiddo and I all left with full bellies. Made a stop at Michaels since they sent me another $5 reward voucher and the photo storage things were on sale again, so I now have another seed organizer. Then back to familiar territory where I picked up underclothes and a few clothes for kiddo's upcoming school year. Back to my parent's house where I helped my Dad set up a Roku and we stayed for supper.
Forecast calls for rain the entire week although nothing but a few sprinkles yesterday. Of course the county-wide yard sale is this weekend and it's always our biggest moneymaker of the year, so we wait and see.
Almost forgot our biggest excitement of the day was seeing a bobcat cross the road in front of us approximately a mile past my parent's house. Beautiful creature!

She was willing, but as soon as they put the shield(?) in her mouth for her to bite down on she started gagging. I've got a problem with this, too. There's only one dental technician I have found who can set up the x-rays for me without me gagging. Has something to do with the shape of the palate and the nerve locations. My dentist uses sensors instead of film and between using a small size and me using relaxation breathing techniques, we manage to get the pictures on the computer. There is a machine that some dental surgeons have where no film is used in the mouth. You rest your chin and forehead in the device and a type of scanner moves around your head/jaws. Doesn't even touch your face and produces a good image. Used it one time before having a molar pulled. Expensive piece of equipment so I don't know if a dentist in your area might have it.

I mowed the front and part of the side lawn this morning, while the shade was there; I'll mow the rest when the shade moves over there later. Will probably still be wet, given the humidity, which is disgusting, and they are saying could trigger a TS, but as usual, I'm not turning off my timers!

Some of our good garden season, and not over yet. We're 'specially proud of the tomatoes (all not shown here)... probably the most pest and disease-free garden we've had. How, I don't know, with the weather we've experienced.
