Had another date with the mattock today. Q and I put in 2 hours and got most of the remaining mishmash removed. There's one small section left which I think I'll be able to finish in an hour or so. I watered it today so that it should be easier to remove what is left, tomorrow. I'm really pleased with this new design in progress. Afterwards, made a run to Home Depot then stopped for a late-ish lunch at the neighborhood cafe that serves up good Native New Mexican dishes. Came home, collapsed for a bit and then hand watered the newly seeded native grass.

Found some Big Mama tomato seeds that are dated 2014. Put them between wet paper towels and in a sandwich bag on top the heating duct. Curious to see if they germinate. And so.... any luck?

With absolutely beautiful weather for the holiday I started the day out in the garden hoeing and making markers for the different varieties of plants. Had a little time to kill before going to a granddaughter’s softball game, plus the grass and garden were too damp to mow or till, so I hopped on the tractor to spread the 22 ton pile of asphalt millings in the area in front of the barn. Went to the game then back on the tractor, they played another game later in the afternoon and after I went back spreading millings. Finished just before dark and a thunder rolled in. For all the thunder, lightning and wind we only received a tenth of an inch of rain so things should dry out today. This morning started out with a little excitement as the new fence to a little bit of a beating…….

Not much going on around here, intermittent showers yesterday and today. We had torrential rain with pea size hail for about 5 minutes yesterday. Made a cushion for the bench seating on front deck. Vacuumed. Brushed The Princess. Took her to the vet this morning for her annual check up, walked. Started raining about a block from home. Oh well. Still raining when we left there. She's in fine shape for an old girl, aside from a tiny cataract, will be 11 this August. Still runs like a crazy dog in the yard!!
Laundry is the only thing on the list for today. Noticed the basil I put in hydroponics is sprouting after 3 days, as is the Kohlrabi which I placed near the lights of the unit. The Cuban Oregano on the counter next to it is going wild, I've given starts to several people and even put some in a pot on the deck. Need to give attention to African violets that are growing several in a pot and blooming profusely! Looks like I'll be giving some of those away too. Took a leaf cutting from one to start in water as it doesn't have any "pups", which is what extras in the pot are called. Hopefully I can successfully separate them. Only the variegated ones have extras. Now to climb up top in garage and find more small pots.
Guess I just found work for myself today. Too wet to mow, maybe tomorrow or Friday, before rain comes again. Looks like June will be better with less frequent rain.

Mumsey , datgirl , young mother taking their 5 month old to the baby sitter reached in the backseat to calm the baby and ended up in the ditch. Neither one was hurt but the car, fence and the guide lines for the light pole suffered……..

centralilrookie, glad no one was hurt. Yesterday I got more tomato plants in the ground. I remember the days of trying to get everything done in one day. Those days are gone. I can take a few days to get things done and it's OK. This morning I went to breakfast with a friend and heard all about her daughters upcoming wedding. Glad I have a son lol. When I got home I went out and planted more beets and a couple of pole beans. Looks like something ate the beans I planted a few weeks ago. One of the cucumbers is gone too. I went around a cut down the weed trees growing in the fence line. Come fall, I'm going to have to dig them out, or try to at least. Was going to cut garlic chive flowers off, but there were so many bees, I just couldn't. Supposed to rain this afternoon again, of course right when I have to meet the school bus. Tomorrow is last day of school and it's early release, so no bus pickup for a few months for me. Did have a pleasant surprise in the garden. Before we sold my parents house, I dug up a rose bush that was in her yard. That was in 2007, and it's only bloomed once, with one little flower. I told it I was going to dig it out this year if it didn't bloom. Well I must have scared it, because it's got a branch with buds. Since my mom would be turning 100 this Thursday, I'm thinking it must be a birthday present.

Transplanting about 46 tomatoes from flats to garden...
Principe Borghese Amish Paste Roma Big Beef San Marzano Moonglow
Celebrity are in a raised bed and Indian Stripe are going into the half-barrel planters in the grow house.
I had to order more bags for the grapes, thought we had about 30 clusters and used all 50 bags with many more to go, hoping for a good grape harvest so we can try making jelly this year.
Strawberries are starting to produce and I have a lot more weeding and mulching still to go out there. It's been raining a lot so I just plan on getting soaked every time I go out there to work. The plants are looking good and I do see some slugs in the patch, not sure yet if I am going to use anything on them. The berries are much larger than last year's crop.
Looks like we lost one of the transplanted blackberries, I sort of expected that one to fail, have two more replacements found hiding in the blueberries. I think it will turn into a respectable-looking blackberry patch by the end of summer.

Yesterday was pleasant as it was just my parents and us. Kiddo washed dishes and did a pretty good job though mom and I occasionally had to rewash one.
One of the highlights of mom's garden has been the voodoo lilies my 95 year-old aunt gave her a few years ago. They finally bloomed and I told Mom to be prepared as they were supposed to smell like rotten flesh. Well apparently they did but the smell had subsided by the time I got to observe them but they're finally putting up shoots and there's a pretty good chance that a few will find a home here.
Woke up this morning and decided to head to town to buy the majority of stuff needed for concessions on Saturday. Unfortunately I was in town before I realized the PTO checkbook and debit card were still on the desk, so just grabbed groceries for us, treated kiddo to a sundae and came back home. Still a bit aggravated with myself but planning on leaving early in the morning to try again solo and yes, I immediately put the checkbook in my purse when I got home.
I did get a little aggravated at hubby this morning though. Kiddo said she needed to go to the bathroom so I insisted he go in the grocery store with us as I was picking up some sale items for mom. Well kiddo rode in the basket of the cart until she went to the bathroom and then decided she wanted to push the cart. He insisted she get back in the cart and the meltdown started. It was like having two kids! Finally convinced him to back off and just let her push the cart as I walked alongside guiding it when needed. She did great, stopping when I told her to and putting stuff in the cart. As a matter of fact it all went well until we got to the car and hubby wanted her to get in the car before the cart was unloaded and round two started and dare I say she and I were victorious as we pushed the cart to the corralle and walked back to car together. I know he wants to protect her but she's getting older and needs to learn just like any other kid.

After our morning excitement sweetheart and I went to Costco for a few items. Returning home she worked in the flowers and I mowed the yard. Love all the grass clippings that are getting spread.Made a couple of passes with the big tiller and got a couple of rows of green beans planted. With the chance of rain looming I decided to get everything tilled. Finished just before dark so if the rain misses us I hopefully will have a good day tomorrow getting some seeds in the ground.

There's one small section left which I think I'll be able to finish in an hour or so. I watered it today so that it should be easier to remove what is left, tomorrow. Looks like my dates with the mattock are done for the season. it took about an hour and a half but I got it completed. The mishmash is cleared out and I can see the forms and design of that front garden taking shape. In the scope of the entire front yard it is a smallish portion I am reworking but it is amazing how much it changes the feel. Loving it!
