We've had 2 weeks of days in the 60's (with a snow storm and cold temps in between) I've started doing some spring cleanup in the perennial beds...just the ones south and west facing. The soil is warm and workable. I want to spread some compost, give those perennials that are waking up (some are on time, some are way too early) a bite to eat. Will it hurt them to give the soil its spring feed, this early? It's only mid February, after all. Many of the plants and I are acting like it's mid March.

I wouldn't be too concerned. Though, there is more potential for nutrient loss due to leaching if done too early. Not nearly as much of a concern with compost as synthetic fertilizer or raw manure.
Send a bit of that warmth here would you. Temperature was below zero when I fed the sheep this evening.

I don't know about this but is it possible to stimulate too much growth if feeding too early? I am thinking that if they grow too much too soon that any cold snap in the future weeks could hurt them.

Go hunt some leaves for future mulch. That'll keep you busy.

Add my concurrence with Rexx's, Karen's and GulfCoastGuy's. Much as it's tempting, I think it's still just too early. With one violent storm after another, we still don't know what might happen before Spring arrives, whenever that happens. Usually our Februaries are more mild, with decreasing severe weather events. Now we're in the midst of about a week of sub-zero temperatures and wind chills.
I made that mistake once. Once was enough.
Even the birds and little critters don't come out here anymore. (Maybe they're watching survival programs on the Discovery Channel?)

I'm laughing gulf.... you've read me perfectly. I just need something to keep me busy in this unusually beautiful weather. Rexx- I had the same thought, that it could stimulate growth too early. It's one thing if nature is promoting the growth (and as I said, some of the plants do wake up at this time, some are a month early) but I guess I don't need to add to it. ok I am sufficiently talked down. I could not stand it either. Nice here and bare ground. The garden had dried out pretty good, so I went out and threw in a few seeds. We will see.......
