Its great that he's issued the encyclical and I admire him for it. But its in a way easy for him to do so on something that he has no control over. With 7 billion people heading towards 9 billion in 2050 and increasing consumption in the developing world the best thing he could do would be to rescind the prohibition on birth control and advocate limiting population growth. Would be an anti poverty agenda as well. I won't hold my breath on that one.
And thats not even taking into account the churches stands on homosexuality, married clergy, women priests, abortion. I wonder what his real views are on those issues.

Actually, his tone has been one of reconciliation with homosexuals..IMO a long time coming. He hasn't addressed the woman priests issue but has expanded the deacon and Eucharistic ministers to include more women...with the shortage of priests he has talked about allowing priests to marry. The abortion issue..no..don't see that as ever happening. The Catholic Church has always supported the rhythm method...don't have sex during your fertile time...but we all know that is another form of Russian roulette .

Claude, actually it was more of a Catholic version of "hate the sin, not the sinner". The church doctrine hasn't changed.

I would agree with you there but I can't see that happening. I am happy that at least he's doing something though.

Hey..it's become something that is being discussed. For the first time in my 62 years there is a dialog.

I agree, claude. The fact that it's being discussed is a big step. "Rome wasn't built in a day" and changes in The Church will be slow. But they are coming. And Pope Frances is a wonderful initiator. However, I don't see abortion ever being sanctioned.
