Black Lab, Summer, is scratching more than usual... Had her to vet for regular check up who said it could just be allergy... She has no rash nor fleas...gets brushed regularly...and is clean...
Looked online and read about supplemental Fish Oil which might help... Know that fish oil can be an anticoagulant so too much of that good thing can then not be a good thing...
Anyone here use fish oil as supplement for their dogs?... What are your opinions?...

When I was a kid and teenager, we had a mutt dog that was in general very healthy and lived to the ripe old age of 18. (He looked kind of like Benji, but black and gray and smaller.) His only real problem was senstive, itchy, and dry skin. He often got "hot spots" and would scratch a lot. Back them, the vet recommended giving an egg mixed with milk and a small amount of veggie oil added once a week or so. This was at least 15 years ago and the vet in town was an old timer in a rural town. It's likely that more modern advice exists now, like the fish oil.

Thank you, restless! I find that the old timey solutions to things are often better than the newfangled... Did the egg, milk, oil work?

It did seem to, Ahntjudy. We also tried to bathe him less so that his skin wouldn't get so dry. He had long hair and it needed to be cut once every two months at the groomers. He loved to be groomed, get baths, and swim. Even though he was a long haired dog, he was rough and tumble and loved to run with us through the yard, nearby woods, springs, streams, etc. We tried to keep him clean so he didn't need so many baths and keep him out of the water more often. So it may have been a combination of things.

Ahntjudy, coincidentally, I heard from another friend today that fish oil helped his cat's skin problems.

Our last lab/mix, Coco, had itching problems. She mainly chewed at her feet. Vet said probably allergy to grass. We tried Predisone, she gained a ton of weight, like 16 lbs. Then I looked at her food and stopped the Prednisone. She lost the excess weight quickly. It isn't uncommon for dogs to be allergic to corn and beef. So I got a food without those things, it seemed to help some. Plus I put doggie boots on her for winter walking to keep the ice melt chemicals off her feet. We fed her an egg a day too, can't say that helped much. I started washing her feet each time she came in the house until the major allergy season was over.
So the change in food and keeping feet clean helped more than anything.
