For that to work, you need to plant the first two years, so you always have first year plants growing from the previous year's seed and second year flowering plants from seeds two years before.

Well the mallow had buds on it and technically I should have cut back the plant when putting it in to force the energy into the roots, but I decided as the flowers opened I would be cutting them back when spent. So I have let it flower as I wanted to see the color.
