I have lots of bumble bees on my property. When we lost all of our honeybees to CCD 4 years ago we decided to take a break from beekeeping but we really missed seeing them and hearing their buzzing so we ordered a new "package of bees" from Georgia and got started again. We currently have 3 colonies.
We really do not take too much of their honey. We just like the bees and want to provide a nice place for them to live.
Lately I have been enjoying seeing them work on the tiny asparagus flowers. They hang upside down and really dig into the flowers. The pollen must be bright orange that I can't see because every bee on them has bright orange back legs where they carry pollen.
I am currently squishing asparagus beetles daily and I am very careful not to grab a honeybee by mistake!

The plight of the Monarch butterflies has made headlines and hopefully can help the bees too. I hadn't heard very much about the butterflies. I do see monarchs in my garden regularly.

Very nice.
I confess, I started keeping bees for the HONEY. In this country it is hard to winter bees. Even if I went all out to get them ready and left plenty of honey on them, they would often die over winter. I came to the conclusion that I was going to change my management to push the bees for a box of honey for me first, then if they can make winter fine, if not at least I have some profit from them. The equipment lasts a long time, the bees come and go. I buy packages every year and push them for a box of honey.
