... it was great getting goldfinches to this yard for the first time last summer... PS: Just to mention, as Breezy said, finch food is often sold as "thistle" seed. It isn't thistle at all, it's seed of a composite, Guizotia_abyssinica. tinyurl.com/2cqetl4 . It's so expensive because it's shipped from Africa and needs special processing to sterilize the seed to keep it from growing rampant here! And Breezy, your deck sounds like a prime destination for your local birds! Good job. Thanks! But the Purina "Finch Food" I buy for my feeders isn't Nyjer or Thistle - it's a mix that, while it does include some Nyjer, is a mixture of very tiny seeds attractive to finches. They LOVE the stuff. I offer pure Nyjer seed in a separate feeder.

I have only been feeding the sunflower seeds this winter. I have a suction cup feeder on my (disabled) son's window and as he wakes up he can watch the birds feeding there and on the brick ledge. I tried another mix but they turned it down looking for those sunflower seeds so just never mind. The feeder in the front garden still has that other mix but it has not been eaten much.

We had a huge flock of Robins yesterday. They were going after the few remaining berries on my holly tree. I was happy that they were able to find something. The crab apple tree had already been cleaned off earlier in the winter.
