This is Blue Angel, she is nearly 5 feet in diameter! Wanted these pics on last thread, but the same one kept popping up, so started this one.

Hostas are such great plants. I love them. So durable. So many interesting varieties. They have such a sturdy beauty to them...
I really like your plantings. Nice varieties...nice and healthy.
The Blue is a stunner!
Do you get much slug damage?

My Hosta contribution. They were bought at Home Depot, and I assume everyone in the Hood is growing them! hhahaha The impatiens are from my own saved seed. I love this color of impatiens. They came true, even though they were hybrids. Kinda like what f1 wave petunias do........... they come true most times, or even better when they are f2's.:

I love Hostas but the deer love them just as much. I'll just have to admire the pictures.

mumsey - where did you purchase your giant hostas?
I never see them at the store, and they weren't at the large garden center I visited last month either.

I took some Hosta pics today. I don't know any of the variety names, I just bought what looked pretty and planted them a few years ago. My blue ones are the biggest plants that I have ever seen. Should I divide all of these in the Fall? I never do much with them, just let them grow.
These first two pics show either side of the steps that come down from our deck.
This one is pretty huge
I like this one
Now these are the 2 gigantic blue ones!

Rex, yours are beautiful! Tbird, what I do when I shop is google the plant as I stand there to see what it truly is. Sometimes the info labels are a little off.
I think I found Blue Angel at WalMart of all places! Seems after a few years the "Hosta of the Year" shows up in nurseries/big box stores. Blue Angel is a fast growing blue hosta. Another nice one is Elegans, but very slow growing. There are some additions to the "angel" family, but are not necessarily blue. I just got Earth Angel. Looking for Guardian Angel and Fallen Angel.
Fall is the best time to transplant/divide since that is when they are growing roots. I took a chunk out of Blue Angel and it doesn't even look like I touched it. Some of the really big ones (when mature) I have found at Home Depot. Guacamole is very nice, fragrant and HUGE. Patriot and Wide Brim are a couple other big boys. I have even seen Rhino Hide at a nursery, but a very small start, probably a one year old. I try to buy the larger ones, with at least 3 "eyes" or shoots, those will be the older plants and will mature sooner.
I have another blue that is called Blue Hawaii. This is the second year and it seems to grow quickly. Got that one at Lowe's or Homey's. Wow, there are hundreds of hosta varieties and I'd love to have them all!
I have most of them labeled in the gardens, 55 in all! Probably 10 don't have names since they were divisions of ones I didn't know in the first place.

So Mumsey, do you divide them every Fall or only every few years? Mine definitely look ready to divide this year don't you think?
BTW, sometimes in Photobucket when you click on the IMG code it does not say "copied" and you will have to right click (if you have a PC, not a mac)and then click "copy". Then you can paste it into the posting.
If you were getting the same photo multiple times, then it was not copied. I have had this happen before so now I watch when I click the IMG code to make sure it says copied before I go back to my posting. PB is kind of quirky at time but it generally works pretty well.
tbird - my giant hostas came from the local greenhouse.

Rex, depends on how many divisions you take each Fall. If you take only one, then you could take one every Fall. If you take 2-4, then wait a couple years. The size of the plants will tell you when to divide. I never disturb the entire plant, just dig sections from the edge or perimeter so as not to disturb the main plant. I figure the main plant is already established and I don't want to disturb that.
I might have to have a hosta sale next spring! They can be dug in Fall and overwintered in pots turned upside down (leave them in the pots) in the garden and covered with mulch.

I might have to have a hosta sale next spring! I might have to do the same thing. You can see how many I have and I can't bear to compost them.

Do you know how when hostas come up in the spring (those nubbins)....... if they have been in the same place for a while......they come up in a circle.............but nothing in the middle?
They need divided. Even though they fill in and look good..............they need divided.

I can't remember when I divided them last. It was maybe 4 years ago but I never noticed empty middles. I am going to divide all of mine this year. They are just getting too big!

Yes, Lisaann, I have one that is like that, a empty spot in the middle. Need to concentrate on that one this Fall.
