Bees are important to the gardener, and many gardeners also keep bees. They are interesting critters. I want to start a thread for you to share your experiences with the bees, and we can talk about the bees. I have been a beekeeper for many years. At present I only have two colonies, but have had lots more at times . Here is a picture of a frame with a queen bee on it. for more info: www.kelleybees.com/

While I don't "keep" bees, I definitely appreciate them!
Before I had my garden, they used to bug me (pun intended?). I would be at my friends ranch and they always flew by me (inches). Then in my own yard, they would harass me it seems.
Now is a different story. Just today I was pulling weeds under a lemon tree (which is blossoming/flowering) mere inches from the bees. The buzz was loud in my ear! But we have an understanding. When I am watering the trees, or doing yard work, they leave me alone lol.
You bet if I had the space, I'd definitely have bees on my property. I'm on 1/3 acre, which I've been told is too small to support a small colony. Half of the third acre is house/sheds. So I really have 1/6 acre lol

Kevin- I'm certainly not a bee keeper but when I lived in town there was a neighbor, a couple of blocks over, who kept bees on his city lot , which was a typical lot size and far less than your 1/3 acre. My understanding is that bees can travel a few miles to feed.

I have 0.18 of an acre, so less than 1/4. My FIL has 4 colonies on an average suburban lot.
