Celery does not grow well here. Too dry. I tried it one year to my great disappointment. I thought if I watered it a lot it might succeed. But no.
Yours look beautiful, LA.

yes!
I have grown celery 3 years in a row from BULK BIN celery seeds!
I mostly grow it in the back yard in containers and use it as a micro green - my crop from last year is flowering - i'll go take a pic
last year, I made a point to grow some to take to the CG, it grew just dandy! I didn't 'blanch' it or anything, and hardly used any... later in the year, when I was feeling better, I discovered something ate it! down to the soil! LOL had some kick but roots! difficult to pull up
next to it there is chives, to give you an idea how small these are

I had hoped to get some in by now but didn't.
One of my father's neighbors and I were discussing gardening, what we're growing or plan to grow, and when I said I wanted to grow celery she cautioned me that it's difficult to grow as it needs to be surrounded by a large box to keep it from becoming bitter. I thought each individual head needed to be blanched to prevent bitterness.
Do you wrap the bases of celery plants or surround a group of them with a box? I hadn't heard of the box method before and was wondering how it could actually prevent bitterness since the base of the plant is still exposed.
Lisa, at what point do you cut the plants, then allow them to regrow again?
Also, I was wondering about just taking the base from celery I've bought from the grocery store for eating purposes, and just planting that base. I remember Mom and Dad used to do that with some vegetables but I don't remember if it was with carrots or celery.

Yesterday I was buying what I thought were parsley plants at a local farm. The woman explained that I was buying Lovage. She said it was one of her favorite plants for the herb garden and was a great, but strong, celery substitute. We'll see...

Do you wrap the bases of celery plants or surround a group of them with a box? I wrapped my stalks with newspaper and tied it together while leaving the leaves exposed. If you cover the whole plant with a box, how would it get any light? I don't think that I like that idea.

I picked up a pkg of 4 for s & giggles. It says self blanching. Does this mean I don't have to wrap it or tie it up? It's a first for me.

This is my fourth year growing conquistadore. I love the strong celery flavor! I sometimes wrap with newspaper in the fall to protect from those first frosts..I leave the tops open too. It grew until November here in CT..then I dug it up, plopped it into a pot that I left on the SUNY kitchen counter and continued to eat it until January. I love the flavor in soups and at nearly $4.00 a head for organic it's worth the effort. I have 10 plants this year and they look healthy. I just mulch and grow them in the wetter bed where they thrive.
