Well, I spoke too soon, we now have them. Not many but there are some holes in the beans. Neighbor saw 2 on his beans, I haven't seen them but the evidence is there! I mixed up the last of my Pyola spray and went after them. I only use it when I start to see evidence.

the best gnat repellent is "Absorbine Jr." I've been using it for 50 years and haven't found anything that works better. I keep a bottle in my tackle box so I can't forget to bring it. Gotta try this! Does it also repel mosquitoes? Gnats bother me sometimes when fishing too.

What is Pyola? That clay stuff?
I sprayed them with Spinosad which is supposed to kill them but I don't really see any evidence of that so they either died and more arrived to take their place or they didn't die and are still there. I will try some Neem tonight. It is supposed to make the leaves taste bad to them.
I did try some insecticidal soap solution with hot pepper sauce mixed in but they didn't seem to care. Last week it rained every day so it washed it off pretty quickly though.
I hate using anything because bees do go to the bean flowers but I have to do something so I will try to only spray the upper leaves which is where they like the best anyway.

Sorry Brownrex, they are nasty pests. Try some milky spore..it works over time. Maybe a cover? Tulle? Held up so that they don't touch the plants? If you keep them off, they might move on to eating something else ??? idk of anything that works well. Sorry.

Thanks. I have 2 pheromone traps far from the garden and it seems to be helping greatly with the number of beetles on the asparagus fronds. I can't spray anything on them because the bees love the asparagus flowers and I refuse to kill bees.
I attached my commercial traps and lures to two 5 gallon buckets with a few inches of water in them. I get so many beetles that I would have to empty those little traps twice a day.
I am also going to spray some Neem on the beans tonight and just keep it on the uppermost leaves and away from the flowers.
I also have Pyganic which is another organic spray which I will resort to if the Neem does not work. I am running low on Pyganic and it is really expensive so I will try the Neem first. The articles say that it is also a feeding deterrent which would be good.

Have you considered using the nematodes or milky spore to try and kill the grubs in your yard? You have quite the infestation. :(

I live on 4 acres so that would be a LOT of milky spore or nematodes!
This is the worst we have seen in 4-5 years so it's not like this every year. Last year was almost nothing.

I had a real bad year or two with JB about 8 years ago. I used the milky spore putting on the garden and yard around the garden and was surprised how well that worked. I also put it on late in the fall near frost time so many slumbering grubs and larva are killed by tilling late in the season . But I didn't till the grassy areas. I hardly saw any Japanese Beetles the next season.

I till my garden in the fall and that exposes insects that are trying to overwinter but the JB grubs feed on the roots of the lawn for the remainder of the summer so there really shouldn't be any of those in the garden.
restless - this is just a portion of my back yard. I have 2 gardens and this one is the one in the bean picture with the beetles. See what I mean about treating the lawn?

Well, I only treated about half of my front lawn and the dogs area in the back. Because the bacteria will multiply over time and encompass wherever there are grubs. As an added plus, it also kills off flea larvae that are in your lawn, overwintering.
I did not do my entire yard because part is meadow and it was just too expensive...but what I did do was effective.

I was out tying up my tomatoes the other day and noticed some defoliation of tomato leaves... Didn't see any caterpillar 'dirt' around like usual... So now I'm on critter alert... B-|
