So this afternoon I'm walking back to the house from the garden with a basket of veggies and my husband says, "The favorite day in the life of a gardener, bringing in the harvest". I got to thinking about the statement and I agree to an extent. The harvest means the season is winding down, which I don't like. I think my favorite time is the spring, when it's all starting. How about you guys. What's your favorite time of the gardening year?

I enjoy it all, but my most favored time is early in the process. No specific time of the year here, but it goes all the way back to seed shopping / buying, then sowing, the anticipation of germination, seeing the soil break, and then caring for the young babies. The rest is reaping the rewards of this early work. But it's all good.

tough question! Past few years I have been very behind and just getting tomatoes and a few odds and ends planted. This spring was definitely hampered by some seeds being damaged and having no sprouts for some stuff and too late to order and try again.
I do remember the years I was able to really think and plan and have a lot of things in the works and working out. Then there was the year I was doing absolutely great and so excited for the planting out, when my box of hardening off starts were brutally decimated by a hail storm and maybe 10 years later I still remember staring helplessly out the back door at the box not 15' away after a few aborted rescue attempts (it was painful!).
Definitely already thinking about next year! Go big or go home! oh......I'm already home.....

Early in the season is definitely my favorite time. I'm much more revved up & the weather is more palatable. Of course harvest time is satisfying, but it's just so darn hot here.

That is a tough question. I love getting things going and am biting at the bit to get out there in the spring, but I think I love the harvesting even more. It is so gratifying. But the past 2 or 3 years my favorite is the day after I've put the beds to sleep for the winter. I am so tired by this time that I am so ready and relieved for the break!

I think seed starting is my favorite…so much potential in that sprouted seed.
That’s before the failures start to happen. And you don’t realize that the seeds in your seed envelope are the wrong thing. All is well with the world.

I've been mulling this over all afternoon. I thoroughly enjoy every step of the way, from spring seed ordering and planting, through the mid-season maintenance, and then, HARVEST, when the payoff off from all that hard work rolls into the kitchen. Yeah, it's gotta be harvest season. Although I agree with you, datgirl about the bittersweetness of the approaching end of the main growing season.

I can't say it's early that's my favorite, because I'm constantly busy with something, and as much as I prefer the weather, there's just so much to do! My favorite times are when I'm actually getting to eat the things, starting early, with the cold weather crops, but the best are the tomatoes - something that I don't grow in the off season, and something I don't buy fresh. And about the same time tomatoes start coming in, the garlic is another thing that gets harvested, and that's another favorite item.
The fall is my favorite time of the year, as far as weather goes, because all this heat and humidity is finally gone! A lot of work, with all the cleanup, but nothing like the spring.

Harvest is the best time for me. And the watching of things grow. Because I mulch heavily there isn't much "weed" maintenance. And sharing of the bounty!

Hmmm. I'd have to say early spring as I really enjoy finally getting outside and pushing the season. This year hasn't been the best for some crops but has been extremely satisfying as I've been able to get the garden under control after throwing my hands up in exhaustion last year. Plus I have some massive onions and paste tomatoes waiting to be harvested. Ya know asking what time of the year is my favorite is a bit like asking a mother of 12 which kid is her favorite.

asking what time of the year is my favorite is a bit like asking a mother of 12 which kid is her favorite. As a mother of nine, my answer would be,"Whichever one is in front of me".

Putting the garden to bed for the winter! Harvest is in the pantry, plants are pulled, garlic in the ground, frost in the air, sittin' on the back porch drinking a coffee, thinking about how next year's garden is going to be the best one ever.

No, well, at least not yet, anyway. It's just that my favorite gardening time in general is the fall, when I can sit back and say "Mission Accomplished!"
