Well…I got the best harvest from July planted pumpkins…they were smallish but tasty…go for it,!

I’m sorry this happened to you, that’s so frustrating. It probably was an insect, maybe mole crickets or cutworms, or maybe even small rodents looking for moisture. When I was growing in the desert years ago, I remember few to no insect pests, but always had to cut strips of fine 1/4 inch hardware cloth and roll them up into cages and sink them in the ground around baby squash and melon seedlings. I like the early butternut suggestion, or any early pumpkin really, check the days to harvest for different varieties and compare to your first frost date, or plan to do a couple hoops and some frost cloth or plastic to extend the season. If you get frost before Thanksgiving, you could also plant some carrots. Carrot pie could be fun for the holidays and carrots like cold weather. Best of luck
