I've got a question about pruning Buddleja --- prune back hard to 2-3 ft each winter as some do, or simply remove branches that flowered last year? I've got a two-year Nanho Blue that is getting well-established, and I'd like to bring it to its full glory.

Out of the two types of Buddleia, "Nanho Blue" belongs to the type that should be cut back in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Although it sounds drastic - pruning down to 6"-12" in later winter/early spring is suggested.

When I had them I didn't cut back every year. It depended on how they were doing, I might go 2 or 3 years before doing a dramatic cut back. But they always came back beautifully with the more aggressive pruning.
