It's winter. Most of us haven't geared up for gardening yet (and those that have- it's not too late!) So a couple of us have been thinking 'lets have a creative winter garden project. Let's make a scarecrow.' Maybe some (all) of you would like to join in. This won't be a contest, no prize, just the joy of doing something for fun and sharing our ideas and process! Scrounge around for an old shirt, pants, skirt, dress, scarf, hat, worn out work gloves, old socks or shoes, ribbons, whatever else strikes your fancy. Repurpose, recycle, thrift store, yours, your kids/grandkids out grown clothes, even curbside 'shopping'. It doesn't have to cost $$. Use whatever you have. It doesn't have to look realistically human or professional-- just fun. The more character it has, the better! 3ft- 6ft- it doesn't matter.
Get others involved to help: kids, grandkids, neighbor kids, partners, adult family, friends, neighbors, mail deliverer, garbage collector... Some ideas to get started.... A couple of wood or bamboo sticks to make a cross, (this will be the foundation for the body and arms) straw, leaves, grass clippings, old rags for stuffing clothing and head.
Stuff an old pillow case with straw or whatever to form the head (or a plastic grocery bag filled with other plastic grocery bags then wrap in burlap bag). Or simply use a 1 gallon milk jug or ??? Get creative. Take pictures as you go along, if so inclined. You know how we all love pics No real deadline except to try to do this while the gardens are quiet and to have it ready for this years' garden. Or if you already have one, show us what you got. Inspire us!

I always thought these were the ultimate scarecrows... Cripes... that even scares me! I've read scarecrows have to be frequently moved to be effective. Do they scare any birds besides crows? I've tried various bird-scarers in the blueberry patch, but the birds get used to them fairly quickly. Most effective were the silhouettes of hawks with feathers of cut plastic for movement. In the end I just draped netting over the plants to slow the birds down. I don't mind them getting some, but they did not understand the concept of 'sharing'.

Oooh…this will be a good opportunity to dig through the totes of clothing that we’ll never wear again. Stuff gets packed up and taken to the garage loft, never to be seen again. I wonder what’s up there .

martywny , that's one awesome scarecrow! That'd scare anything away! I've got an old unusable wheelchair in which I could place a long-haired dummy wearing a hat carrying a hoe...but the crows would gather even more. I like my crows, they like me...you can tell I don't grow corn or grains, but the neighbors do. Gotta keep the peace.

martywny, that would make my neighbor crap her pants if I put it in the new garden as it would look down on her house. I also have an old spring I found in the woods last year. Hmmm....

I just hang a big picture of my avatar out there. Seems to do the trick.

Well, I found the wig and the hat. I have an old apron that I might use. The wig is “Vicki Lawrence blue”, and while my hair isn’t, this scarecrow could end up looking like me out in the garden. Hat, apron, sunglasses…

I guess I got a start today in my scarecrow today too. Occasionally we get oddball stuff in the electronics pickup and there's been a catcher's helmet inside the garage door for about a month. Well as of noon today it resides atop a corner post of the new garden fence.
