Since the majority of us will be putting our gardens to rest for a few months, I figured one thread during the winter months would be sufficient. This will give us a place to dream about next season and enjoy (if somewhat enviously) the posts from those of you who garden year-round.

Only two goals so far:
1. Clear off beds, spread compost and cover with mulched leaves.
2. Work on getting framework of greenhouse set up.

I try to garden year round. We usually don't get too hard a freeze here, at least nothing that can't be thwarted with some heavy duty row cover.
Today we will clean out the fennel bed. some are about four feet high with roots to match. Will harvest the beets-the tops are looking pretty good too. They will store nicely in the fridge.
Will also be harvesting the turnip greens and getting them into the freezer for soup, chard can wait a little longer and spinach also needs a few more weeks.
Cabbage has been harvested, quartered and frozen. Usually leave the cabbage out but this was a Summer variety and it doesn't stand up to the weather well.
Am experimenting with the broccoli to see how well it survives the winter and have huge beds of parsley and pots of thyme, sage and rosemary still growing.
Have decided to let the mint run rampant in the front yard. Yes, I know it'll be everywhere, but isn't that the whole idea of a wildlife habitat?

Oh my…my mom shared a small slip of mint when we moved in here and I placed it near the deck and back door. Mom: “I don’t think that’s a good idea, honey. It can be quite invasive, dear.” Every time I pull out the overgrowth in spring and again in fall I can hear her saying that. Too soon old, too late smart.

Hmmm. Thanks for the warning- I will keep a close eye on the spreading activity.

It spreads by root seed and will root up a straggler piece you drop. You can put it in a pot w holes and bury the pot to the soil line…that’s the best control. I use a 15 x 15’ tarp and it’s a 4’ tall pile that I haul out. Twice a year.

I have to get my hydroponics started - I'm late this year. I have some late season crops out there, and it's warm this year, so far, which is why I'm running late!

Nothing as far as gardening until January when the onions get started!

I'm growing my winter lettuce, which is the best I grow all year. I've been out of town, and there are a ton of leaves out there. Need to clean some of them up and uncover the lettuce.

Hmmm. Thanks for the warning- I will keep a close eye on the spreading activity. I have mine planted in a half whiskey barrel and a second bunch in a large ceramic pot. No problems with spreading.

My daughter loves my chocolate mint. Don't mind it spreading because she pulls it all up two or three times a garden season.

Prepared most of the beds for cool season planting at "Mom's Giveaway Garden" Planted broccoli (Waltham), cabbage, arugula (for my ladies) and sugar snaps right away. Calling for three days of rain locally so hopefully timing is good. Three prepped beds are resting for now. Still need to add herbs, garlic, spinach and lettuce in the various "pockets" within a week or two. Roxy, aka The Mermaid, was kind enough to sow some starts for yours truly. Hopefully, I have the presence of mind to write this all on the calendar/journal.

Being in the fields really put me behind as far as gardening goes. Now that tomatoes and such are cleaned up if we get the predicted 70+ degree days I should get the garden tilled. Along the fence line that is parallel with the road I’ve laid light poles and filled in for future perennials but sadly it’s a weedy mess so I think I’ll take the weed burning torch out and clean it up. That way it it’ll be ready to till and plant wild flowers in until the new fence is installed hopefully next year. I kind of got the cart in front of the horse in that area.

I'm so behind this year! Tomato stakes were pulled and put away in the new garden but in the old garden the majority are still in the ground. Too much going on between now and the end of the year to stress about the garden now, but when kiddo returns to school in January hubby and I plan to tear down the old outbuilding and burn some of the stumps and branches that we had cleared for the greenhouse. Onion seed has been ordered and received, so time to think about gathering seed starting supplies too.
