a few day ago I posted diagrams from a 1917 city garden plan from portland oregon. some may think looking at the plan planting it out would be simple matter but here is the challenge. I will post all 7 parts of articles that appeared in that newspaper relating to vegetable gardening. your challenge is simple how many of each type vegetable plant would you need to plant to completely grow the vegetable garden defined by the diagrams and the included info, you may use other standard spacing info for planting vegetables as well. it is not as easy as it looks at first glance. your answer should list each type of vegetable how many of each plant is the garden. the prize is bragging rights. the deadline for answering is sep 30 2023. good luck here is the info:

That sounds a bit too much like homework but I may give it a shot later.

This sounds like a Winter project/challenge for most of us, too much going on in the season right now.

So I was coming back to say there was absolutely no way I could even think about this challenge with being behind from being sick, volunteering at school this week and three days at a convention next week, but... You listed the completion date as September 30, 2023. That is doable. Can't say I'll do it, but that's definitely doable. Now back to laundry and hopefully squeezing in a few more winks before 5am.

I must admit, I mis-read the deadline date too! Will look it over this Winter.

the deadline date was part of the test. to complete the challenge you need be on top of reading comprehension and spatial analysis.

wargarden2017, my age related changes are accelerating - I already have enough of a challenge just to get through life, let alone take on another challenge. And, while this isn't a criticism, that old print is a bit hard on these old eyes. I'd have to copy some of it, paste in a new document and enlarge it. I'm cutting back on computer time, and all that reading would be inconsistent with a healthy goal. But it's an interesting project.

I noticed the article about Fishing Fever on one of those pages....thought maybe it would expound to using the remains as fertilizer, which is what we do.

That is an interesting challenge, but my garden is a bit unconventional in layout --- 18 4'x15' beds spread out over a 90'x80' area, for wheelchair access.

Wheelgarden both interesting and simple but so far no one has been smart enough to solve it.

Wheelgarden both interesting and simple but so far no one has been smart enough to solve it. I believe it's a matter of poor word choice, but please don't insinuate that because no one has tackled this, that we are not smart! I have dealt with insinuations like that as a result of growing up in a rural and economically poor area. I also deal with it in connection to having a special needs child quite often and yes, it does hit a nerve. As far as tackling the problem presented, now would be the time for me to do that since I'm deep into garden organization, planning, and processing previous years' data. But do I seriously need to add another project on top of the several already in progress, especially one that involves planting in a style that I don't use for the most part?

Wheelgarden both interesting and simple but so far no one has been smart enough to solve it. I was interested when I thought the challenge was to actually plant this garden design. As far as just doing the basic math, ok it says plant two 25 foot rows of beets, beet seeds are always sown at least 1” apart, and then sometimes thinned to 3” spacing after germination (beet seed pods actually often sprout two plants per seed pod). So on 3” spacing within row, two 25 ft rows would mean 200 beet plants. Do the same for the spinach and carrots. I space spinach plants 2” apart, so that’s 150 spinach plants per 25 ft row. The other stuff like corn and squash and beans and tomatoes, the diagram literally says “plant 10 hills” or “8 tomato plants” per 25 ft row. It would definitely be fun to actually plant this garden and take photos of it and post them here, but as far as just doing the basic in-row spacing calculations, that’s pretty straightforward which is probably why no one has been interested
