If you want to call it that - lol! Believe me, it wasn't by choice. Some were dumped at the barn where I boarded my horse at the time, one was abandoned by someone's evicted tenant, others just showed up at the door, & since we literally lived in the middle of nowhere & had a cat-hating neighbor with a gun, we always ended up taking them in. One was pregnant & we ended up having her get a kitty abortion. Sad - but the local shelter was euthanizing cats left & right & I wasn't going to end up with 15 cats. We had three litter boxes, & so long as we kept up with them once or twice a day, never had a problem with that. In fact, one would never know there were any cats in the house at all until the sound of the electric can opener. Then they'd all come out of the woodwork like some bizarre Grade-B horror flick.

New Boy (LouC.) has been living in the house since about Jan 10. And it's still an adventure. New Boy and the white one (Siamese mix) have gotten along well, have slept on the same chair, and lately been actually playing together. They have both been playful on their own, but now they seem to be working together on that. Very pleasing to watch when they play hide and seek, or chase each other with no ill intent. It's been more dicey with the other two resident cats. Still lots of dirty looks and growls, and occasional fights with significant vitriol and bits of fur. They do seem to allow themselves to be closer to one another without all h*ll breaking loose, so that is some progress. I'm working on touching/petting LouC. as often as possible. He is less afraid of me than before, but still not all that comfortable. Yesterday for the first time, he actually sat next to me on the same couch. I remained perfectly still and spoke to him. But as soon as I put my hand out to let him sniff, he was gone. But this was a big step forward. This is taking more time than I want, but it is going in the right direction, mostly. He is a lovely, sweet cat.

That's great gianna! We have a new kitty too, except she's extremely friendly. Showed up last week half-starved and still two more weeks before I can get her into the vet.

New Boy (LouC.) has been living in the house since about Jan 10 ('23). And it's still an adventure. Over a year later I must report this has not gone very well. Everyone is still alive and healthy, but they just all do not get along, and it's a lot more work for me keeping them separate. Herding cats is not easy, and 9 litter boxes is no joy. Recap: I had 3 existing, young, happy cats, all indoor, living in a relatively large house, at peace with each other. And the adopted stray, now also indoor cat. All males. All neutered. Two of my existing cats just have never accepted the new cat. So I have to keep them separate or they fight. Or worse, mark things. The third original cat is what someone has termed a Mojito cat - one that will get along with everyone and everything. At night, I pair him with the new cat. Right now I've got two gangs - the Crips and the Bloods (not really). It's complicated. Maybe when they get older, they'll care less.

gianna , have you tried catnip? I’d offer it to the troublemaker first. It will either enhance the nasty or mellow the kitty.

have you tried catnip? I’d offer it to the troublemaker first. It will either enhance the nasty or mellow the kitty. All 4 of the cats love the stuff. I've got some nice potent dried leaves from my own plants. Not sure I'd be able to keep them all drugged up 24/7 however. They'd probably like to try....

gianna, I had a cat named Maggie who only liked her sister and very few humans. Her sister suddenly died and I hit a half-grown kitten with my car and broke some ribs. I brought him inside and placed him on a pillow on front of the television (he loved Nascar races) and physically carried him to the litter box for a few days. Maggie eventually warmed up to him and eventually another cat in her last few years but she wasn't the most welcoming of cats. We had a female cat named Dude (because the lady who gave her to us swore she was male and I neglected to inform my first hubby otherwise until he became attached). Maggie never did warm up to her and Dude eventually became the garage cat who could sleep through anything as long as she was curled up close to the stove.
