gardendmpls, your cats are adorable! But, then, I don't think I've ever seen a cat that's not - they're all so loveable.

I love Charlies color pattern. Reminds me of a holstein cow.

gardendmpls, My neighbor has a cat that looks very similar to Charlie, except he's gray and white. His name is Earl Grey.

gardendmpls,I just saw this thread. Any updates? How horrible for this to happen. We are thinking about adopting a cat from a friend that has 2 left from a litter.

My call was referred by the city to the health department which would not even call the ASPCA (which has no numbers listed except for adoption). The health department person told me I could call the state environmental control board. At that point I gave up and buried my cat in the flower garden.
The owner of the lot insists that no rat poison was put down, but agreed to go over to check. Another person told me there was a vacant house where cats went in and out that may have been a target. I did post a warning on the community boards and someone around the corner from me posted that they had found two dead kittens which had been poisoned and two others which survived after veterinary care. They have a cat rescue organization involved trying to get some response. Probably will get the same run-around that I did. Meanwhile, I am having a time making sure Charlie does not dash out. On a positive note, I saw the first live cat outside since this started. Looks unfamiliar. Hope it makes it.

Seriously - the only way to avoid this is to keep your cats as indoor pets only. All of the veterinarians I've used both in New York & here in Virginia have strongly stated that the Number One cause of cat deaths is allowing them outdoors.

the only way to avoid this is to keep your cats as indoor pets only This may be true, but is difficult when you start out with feral adult cats. Shomer wouldn't let anyone touch her for a few years. Then little by little she became more trusting. She was at the point where she was staying in more than out, but still wouldn't let me pick her up, although she would sit in my lap briefly and was becoming a cuddlebug. We have two ferals rescued as kittens that stay upstairs and never go downstairs, much less outside. I am working on Charlie to train him to stay in, but he did dash past me Friday and jump off the porch. Fortunately he just sat in the bushes until I could grab him.

Anyone read the Chicken Soup for the Soul books? One of the animals foci is "My Clever, Curious, Caring Cat" with a wide variety of feline activities and adventures, including one who scares off door-to-door salespeople.
If I remember correctly, there are some stories about cats' challenges in adjusting to new homes. Some do, some never do; the owners adjust instead.
