It seems all I do is weed, morning, noon and night taking a break between the 3. And the older I get the slower it is to complete this task.

Weeding

I use hay mulch to keep the weeds down and try to spend ten to fifteen minutes weeding almost every day, Toss the grasslike weeds on top of the hay to make a deeper mulch. The others go to the chickens, who take a great interest in observing my weeding progress, especially when I have the blue weed bucket next to me. I find weeding relaxing, except where the poison ivy keeps lurking.

lilolpeapicker, are you growing in raised beds only? Or are you doing some in ground planting also?

My flower gardens are in ground so this is where most the trouble is. Not too much of a problem in the raised bed. Hay here costs $14 a bale. That's prohibitive for me. I will have to put down. After I have done major weeding my back hurts wickedly and I cannot do it for a few days.

My raised beds aren't too bad but its the perimeter of the garden that's the problem and overrun with creeping Charlie. I've been grabbing huge handfuls just about everytime I'm out there but I really need to dedicate a couple of days to getting it out of there. Good news is that it comes up relatively easy because it's rooted in the wood mulch. Bad news is it grows like gangbusters due to the wood mulch. I'm finding that my back is actually quite resilient nowadays; it's my knee that screams at the end of the day.

Hay here costs $14 a bale. I get what they call mulch hay. It may have been rained on and then dried out, but is considered unfit for animals as it might have a little bit of mold in it from being wet. A bale covers a bed and a half, layed on thickly and is a lot cheaper than the regular hay.

Might add that the feed store also lets me gather what they call spiiled hay, basically whatever escaped the bales in their storage shed. I sweep it up and they even provide the contractor bags to put it in. I get free hay and they get a free clean-up.

I haven't bought hay in years but the going price for mulch hay here is $3-5. Thankfully I know a few farmers that still do square bales
