Another month, another list. 1. Mulch was delivered day before yesterday - so spreading it on beds and pathways is the goal for this month. 2 Build a large hot compost pile using a lot of the mulch (city ground green waste) and other garden trimmings. 3. Continue reducing critter habitat. On-going because things keep growing. Saw a large rattler a couple days ago, it was probably looking for small rodents or the baby quail that like to hang out in the garden. As long as there are critters, there will be snakes. 4. Organize the side yard to make it more functional. These are the main ones for now, though there are always more. Here is the previous thread for May goals: organicgroup.freeforums.net/thread/5380/garden-goals?page=2

Not much different now...basically, waiting! Not much new to do this month. Should have my first ripe tomato, which is always good when they start in June!

The first three are carried over from last month, but here goes 1. Pick up all the river rocks that were strewn about in the shade garden. This will be more of a project than first anticipated as the large rocks from my old waterfall and pond need to be moved so the neighbor can get his tractor in there. 2. Work on constructing bean trellises that will maximize available space. In progress as I'm still gathering supplies. 3. Dig up sod and prepare to lay pavers next to the deck. Just concentrating on getting the area ready this month. 4. Finish up the potato garden 5. Remove mortar from salvaged blocks and create two more beds. Have located a chisel but lamenting that blocks are in full sun. 6. Strawberries: Repot the hanging basket strawberries. I honestly never thought they'd overwinter and they definitely need bigger pots. Repot the alpine strawberries in the small strawberry jar as they dry out too quickly and need a better mix. Replace the alpine strawberry in the herb garden that didn't make it through winter. Give kiddo's new plant a place to grow. 7. Multi-sow more beet transplants as some of the first crop are big enough to harvest. 8. Work on cleaning around the fence in the garden as creeping Charlie is invading the path. Of course this month is hectic with appointments and kiddo has her dental surgery later in the month, so not expecting to complete everything.

Corn going in today or tomorrow, lots of weeding and trimming, time to counterattack with the vinegar/salt/Dawn spray. Opened up about 100' of drainage ditch along the south property line and will finish it all this month. The neighbor is renting a lift to trim trees, I told him I would help once he gets started. Some of my drainage ditch will be under those trees so it's best to remove them first.

Should have my first ripe tomato, which is always good when they start in June! My target for the first ripe tomato has always been July 4th, don't believe it will happen this year.

martywny, is the vinegar/salt/Dawn spray for the area between your raised beds or further away from your gardens?

is the vinegar/salt/Dawn spray for the area between your raised beds or further away from your gardens? I use it wherever I want to eliminate grass or weeds permanently, right at the edge of the bed or in cracks & crevices. The salt is what keeps anything from coming back for a while. I mow the walkways.

I was just given a weed killer recipe that is similar to yours martywny , only it calls for epson salt instead of salt 1 gallon vinegar 2 cups epson salt 1/4 cup Dawn dish soap (the blue original) are your recipe amounts similar? I'd be happy to use regular salt instead.

Table salt is sodium and chlorine combined, Epsom salt is (naturally occurring secondary nutrients) magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen. Given that Epsom salt is typically used as a fertilizer, I would stick with table salt for weed killing, or else you may just end up with giant, clean weeds.

martywny, desertwoman, do you use white vinegar? Cider vinegar? Not only are the weeds growing, but the weed trees are setting records for growth as well. I'll trim off the tops, strip the bark and if they don't start dying I'll try the vinegar mixture.

emmsmommy, desertwoman, thanks. I buy that a lot anyway for cleaning, and it doesn't have the stronger odor.

do you use white vinegar? Cider vinegar? I use white vinegar and usually get it on sale for about $3 a gallon, we currently have 4 gallons in the pantry.
