The bush I bought years ago for $3 at a store closing clearance sale has grown to full size. This year I see some white lilacs on a branch with some of the right color! I wonder if it's trying to revert to parent, as you see in pic there is white on the edge of every individual flower. I did prune it about 3 feet 2 years ago.

Beautiful! If I close my eyes, I can imagine the fragrance.

I have a lilac that we dug out of a friends' yard 12 years ago. It was probably about 5 ft tall. The root ball was large and heavy and we had to drag it to the car on a tarp before heaving it into the hatch. It's the classic lilac ( not white) that grows all over the place. It is full sized now and I prune it every year to keep it below the eave at the front of the house.
The other one I have is called Monge. It's a French hybrid with red-purple flowers. I found it at large nursery and it was pathetic looking. Definitely a rescue. So I asked the yard manager if she could give me a discount (figured it never hurts to ask). She looked at me and said "if you know what you're doing I'll give it to you." (no charge). "I know what I'm doing". That was 10 years ago and it is thriving.

I wonder if it's trying to revert to parent Since all the white appears to be on parts steming from the same main branch, there may have been a mutation of the precursor cells to that branch. It doesn't appear to be coming from a root stock underneath a graft, as it might on a grafted fruit tree or rose.

I have the old-fashioned lilacs and bought a hybrid variety several years ago. I think the hybrid put out a bloom or two last year, but this year it is loaded. Not sure of the variety (tag is history) but it's the same color as the old-fashioned ones, yet blooms a few weeks later and has much fuller blossoms. The smell is heavenly!

Mumsey, it is beautiful! I often wondered if the different lilacs varied in aroma though all should be lilac scented. Mumsey, gianna, desertwoman, gardendmpls, emmsmommy, I planted a bush last year and it is certainly bushier but not too much taller. lots of flowers though. I have another that was here when I bought the house 11 yrs ago. Was kind of scarggily so I cut it back fed it. but it hasn't improved much. It flowers and is pretty but I think I need to do more. Trunk is also not very strong. Debating whether to pull it out.

lilolpeapicker, After I cut mine back, it took a year for it to recover and grow new shoots. I have a Miss Kimm bush too, nice and round, maybe 6' x 6'. The flowers are extremely aromatic, but bringing a bouquet into the house isn't good. They only last a day or two.

They only last a day or two. But the smell is so good! I will cut mine back after the flowering season is done.

My dark lavender lilac is almost white this year. The whole bush and absolutely no smell.

Never heard of that. Colorwise---Was it a hybrid? Remember where you bought it? Did you know the parents?

We bought it and planted it the first spring we moved here, that was in 1997. We bought it from a local nursery and spent more on it than I would today. This is the first year it was so pale and no scent. The flowers were still big and beautiful and the bush was covered with flowers. I did read on a local McHenry gardeners face book page, that some other people had the same thing happen. I wonder if it's a weather thing.

I wonder if it's a weather thing. Could be. Cold damp air (or very hot dry air) may prevent the aromatic molecules from rising, so they quickly vanish. Better conditions, usually warm and moist, usually restore the scent to the air.
