I pretty much accomplished all my April goals or have an hour or so to go until they are completed, so I thought maybe I should post some new goals for May.
1. Organize the chicken house/garden shed (started on that today)
2. Pick up all the river rocks that were strewn about in the shade garden.
3. Work on constructing bean trellises that will maximize available space.
4. Dig up sod and prepare to lay pavers next to the deck. Just concentrating on getting the area ready this month.
5. Retrieve all the bricks from my parent's house.
6. Get the new rain barrel ready and decide on a location for it and the old one.
7. Take more walks and enjoy nature.

I did good work on most of my goals for last month, but not completely. The main one I did not accomplish is arranging for a mulch delivery. Sigh. It wouldn't take much to get the drive ready for that. So I'll move it onto May's list. 1. Mulch delivery 2. More critter habitat clearing. On-going because stuff grows back.. 3. Work on the burmuda grass sprouts to prevent it from coming back 4. Continue with making irrigation more efficient. We might have to ration water this summer. . 5. Start working outside earlier in the day to prevent silly distractions. So many more, but that's enough for now.

1. Clean chicken coop. 2. Dig out layer of compost in chicken pen and spread on garden beds. 3. Pot up everything. 4. Plant potatoes in grow bags. 5. Weed eveything and mulch. 6. Plant out everything. 7. Mow. 8. Plant sale. 9 Put down wood chips in chicken pen and possibly dig a drainage ditch, filling it with gravel. 10. Plant porch flowers. 11. Make some wire tomato cages. 12. Find new spot for hammock. 13. Spend some time in aforementioned hammock.

Well I've finished number 5 on my list as the bricks are all here except the 40 or so mom decided to keep. From my calculations we have exactly 700 in the stack and there's a couple that were under the heater in the greenhouse and a few more around back where I've been playing with layout. Cut a few more locust saplings for goal 3 but it's literally a real pain dethorning them.

Well I've finished number 5 on my list as the bricks are all here except the 40 or so mom decided to keep. From my calculations we have exactly 700 in the stack and there's a couple that were under the heater in the greenhouse and a few more around back where I've been playing with layout I love the look of bricks. At the last house I put in an entire patio with used bricks, basket weave pattern. I'd never worked with bricks before, but it really looked good. I used bricks in case there were not enough funds for the new mortgage and they had to be sold, lol. First house jitters. On my list for May, I've been pulling every piece of Burmuda grass I've been coming across. Fewer than most years, but the drought and perhaps gophers have been helping. And I continue to streamline the irrigation system. In the back, I put a 4-hose connector on the tap. One for the soaker hoses, one for the hose to the compost heap, and 2 for specific areas so I don't have to keep dragging long hoses from here to there. This alone has really helped. In the front, I just re-arranged irrigation to about 15 fifteen gallon pots. All irrigation to all 7 beds and pots in front is now controlled (more or less) at the main tap and can run at the same time. Any bed or hose can be shut off if not needed.

1. Collect more free compost. 2. Start pumpkins and acorn squash for fall. 3. Add more herbs in nooks and crannies. 4. Construct at least one more raised bed. 5. Strategically place stepping stones at mom's to prevent a repeat of her neighbors "Beet Stomp" dance craze. 6. Label plantings. 7. Visit other gardens for ideas. 8. TBD...Other duties as assigned

Woohoo! Just crossed #1 off my list! Chicken house/garden shed is organized! Note I didn't say neat and clean as that would take a few days and it was a functioning chicken house for many years prior. Made a temporary loft for the cardboard, have the last huge tote of chicken poop easily accessible for when I'm ready to compost it, discovered a 3.3 cf bale of peat moss that will be incorporated into the new bed, also discovered another small bale of ProMix giving me six in reserve and have pots, trays, etc. in the same area. Most important is that kiddo's bicycle now has a place of it's own and doesn't need to be placed in the garden cart. There's room to get in out of the rain and I won't have to live in fear when kiddo follows me in now.

My daily May ritual. Tour the garden and talk to the plants. "Grow Darn It!" I see part of a row of beets is not cooperating. Might have to replant that section, if I have more seed.

datgirl, Mumsey, fresh beet seed planted 4/29 …I was finding just a few sprouts, then today it’s much better. Garden hose was set up for veggie garden today, so they’ll probably get better now that they’ve had a good drink.

I cleared the area in front for mulch delivery (city ground green waste). Just have to make the call now. I do get the sifted stuff, so there is a charge for that. Plus a delivery charge.
I've also done more on burmuda grass removal when I come across it.
Some critter habitat removal, but not nearly enough. On-going.

Since tomorrow is the last day of May I thought I'd update my list as I didn't do as well this month.
1. Organize the chicken house/garden shed
2. Pick up all the river rocks that were strewn about in the shade garden. Haven't even started
3. Work on constructing bean trellises that will maximize available space. Have several poles cut so I'd say I'm about 50% finished
4. Dig up sod and prepare to lay pavers next to the deck. Just concentrating on getting the area ready this month. Haven't even started
5. Retrieve all the bricks from my parent's house.
6. Get the new rain barrel ready and decide on a location for it and the old one. Planned on doing this today and I actually bought the right sized bit for the faucet this time and unfortunately it was still in the car with hubby. Still debating location.
7. Take more walks and enjoy nature. Well my days of walking in the woods have come to an end until fall but have enjoyed a few walks on the meadow path this month.
