desertwoman, I've had good luck transplanting volunteers if I get them when they're still small and keep them well hydrated for a few days.

Does anyone have success transplanting volunteers? I've had good luck transplanting volunteers if I get them when they're still small and keep them well hydrated for a few days. Yup...Exactly what emmsmommy said. In fact, I'm transplanting all mine today. Mystery Sunflowers and Tithonia. Plus it's supposed to shower tomorrow so that'll be good.

The sunflowers are stunning this year. Velvet Queen, getting to be 9 ft tall! The pole beans are liking them too, some are climbing the stalks!

I had planted some sunflowers in cells and decided instead of putting them into the ground and have to cage them from the hungry critters, I'd put them in 4 inch pots and keep them in the side yard where they'll be easily visible from inside the house. Easier to water too. They'll definitely stay small this way, but should make nice cut flowers. There's about 40 of them. Definitely an experiment.

gianna you may want to try the "Short Stuff" variety that I grew for the first time this year. Only about four feet tall with bright yellow blooms and nice seed heads.

Baker Creek sells them, so it's a no-brainer to order them next time. Thanks for the recommendation. www.rareseeds.com/short-stuff-sunflowerTruth be told, I can turn any sunflower into a dwarf. It's a talent.

gianna, how do you pull that trick off? As Mumsey said, a small pot. And that pot can be very small, or several planted in one pot. It depends on how dwarfed you want the sunflower. I've left a few in the initial germinating six pack (about 1 1/4 inch square) and they will still bloom. Small flowers, maybe 2 inches across on thin stems about a foot tall. This from a variety that would normally be 4 feet tall and flower with 6 inch diameter. Stunted however, this is nice bouquet size and very pretty, if that is what is desired. Small, not deformed. If you are planting into the ground, plant them much closer together, or even 2 or more in one hole. The closer together, the smaller the flowers. You can also keep them a bit smaller by water-stressing them, as well as denying fertilizer. As gardeners we usually try hard to grow the biggest and the best. It almost seems wrong to try to keep a plant below it's optimum, even when it gives the result we want.

gianna and Mumsey, thanks for the tips. It does seem counter-intuitive --- I've always thought of sunflowers as an open-area plant. This old dog just learned a new trick!

I have a sunflower that looks like it is going to open facing toward the house. It is at a corner of the house.

Lost some of my tall sunflowers. With that 2 days of rain, a couple just tipped over and uprooted and a few more broke. I have a nice bouquet of sunflowers though.

When the sunflowers are done, I cut the seed heads off and put them in the chain link fence. The birds take care of it from there!

I went to cut a few of the smaller sunflowers to bring in the house, and they were all covered in bees
