Cannas

Mom had cannas. Mom-in-law had cannas, too. They sure are pretty, and they spread freely. Brother gave me some bulbs and I wanted to plant them, but from her past experience, Sweetie issued a hard, definite NO! Sweetie done said, "NO!"...better do what Sweetie said, else I'm doghouse-bound and hungry. [Shhh-I might just sneak one out there...don't tell anyone. I'll blame it on the squirrels]

Does Sweetie have a reason why not? I plant them every year. Granted they are a PIA to dig, but I only dig what I will need for the next year and leave the rest to turn into compost. They do not survive Winter here, except in a particularly mild Winter and if they are close to the house foundation. And they sure do multiply, like rabbits! The ones for this year are starting to show their eyes but they won't get planted til mid-May.

Mumsey , it's because of the ones her Mom had when Sweetie was young. What began as six bulbs quickly became 600, and had invaded the neighbor's yard. They overwinter here. Her Dad eventually had to use a backhoe to get them all dug up. She also doesn't like the way they look late in the season,"like dry, ratty cornstalks", according to her. Not to let that deter me, I have sheet metal that I could bury around them and maybe keep them contained. I'll be dodging the skillet if it doesn't work.

Wheelgarden, Keep in mind those things can go a foot or more deep!! I usually end up leaving the deep ones in the ground. I know they aren't going to grow again. I usually keep a 5 gallon bucket full, and I can get that from 2 clumps. If I dug them all I'd have 6 buckets! Hard to even give away here, people don't want to go to the work of digging in the Fall.

This is one near the foundation that has overwintered 2 Winters in a row. It's a giant.
