Today I looked at the Burpee seeds at Ocean State Job Lots - all 40% off - but only got one packet - Zinnia Envy, which is pictured with a green flower. All the rest of the zinnias are mixes, which I don't like to buy. Anyone have experience with this one?

pepperhead212, Yes. It really is green and tall, very nice. Since it's a hybrid the seeds I saved turned out orange the next year.

Only 8 days later than planned, but I planted 36 cells of Queen Lime Orange Zinnia. The Baker Creek seed pack said minimum of 25 seeds…there’s 8 seeds left in that pack.
I have more to plant..needed to stop for a cup of coffee.

I always direct sow zinnias, they seem to grow as fast and quickly catch up with pre-started seedlings.

I'm growing this one too, and really like it. I'm planning on saving seeds. It is open pollinated (just looked it up to make sure www.johnnyseeds.com/flowers/zinnias/queen-lime-orange-zinnia-seed-3355.html?cgid=zinnias#start=1 ) but so many bees visit Zinnias, I'll have to cover the un-open flowers with little mesh baggies, and then hand pollinate. I also ordered Queeny Pure Orange from Baker Creek, also 'minimum 25 seeds', but the packet came with almost double that number. Ok by me. Just planted some of these yesterday too in mini soil blocks. 20 to start.

gianna, I looked at Queeny Pure Orange. It’s quite pretty. Almost tempted, but if I get everything planted that I’ve already purchased, I’m going to have a “color clash”.

I looked at Queeny Pure Orange. It’s quite pretty. Almost tempted, but if I get everything planted that I’ve already purchased, I’m going to have a “color clash”. I'd guess Q pure orange does not look good with the others in the Queen Lime collection - or they would have included it in the Q.Lime mix, which is rather muted. A bright orange flower would be out of place with these. Maybe they should have named it The Orphan Queen. www.johnnyseeds.com/flowers/zinnias/queen-mix-zinnia-seed-4324.html?cgid=zinnias#start=1This morning I planted out in the cool of the morning seedlings of Johnny's 'Giant Dahlia Mix'. I've grown it before a couple years ago, and was disappointed that most of the flowers were medium pink and red, and not much else color-wise. Not the color variety as in their photo. But I still have seed, and decided to try it again. I can pull them out if necessary. I put it in a less-used bed as a cover crop of sorts. And then covered the plants with tulle to keep snails and bunnies from eating them. (Looks like Johnny's is currently out of this variety.) www.johnnyseeds.com/flowers/zinnias/giant-dahlia-flowered-mix-zinnia-seed-1879.html?cgid=zinnias#start=19&sz=18

I had planted some early zinnias and grew them in 4 inch black pots. 24 plants. Today I put these into 15 gallon pots in full sun. 4 plants per large pot. These Zinnia plants I'm planning to see which have particularly lovely flowers, and both save seed as well as take some cuttings. For seed saving, I'll cover a bloom in bud stage with a little mesh baggie, maybe just leave them to self pollinate, or do some hand pollinating for better seed set.
I had been planning on putting out some smaller Zinnia seedlings, got the bed ready, but realized a male guard quail was close and watching. There is a colony of babies that hang out in the area, so I decided to leave and let them be. Though today I did not actually see the babies, but the male was there for a reason. So instead I did the task mentioned above. And tomorrow to plant the Zinnia bed.

I started some lime and canary yellow zinnias in jiffy pellets, and I am going to put some in the ground, and direct seed some closeby, of the same ones. I'll see if the direct seeded ones catch up, as Mumsey suggested.

Zinnias, sunflowers, nigellas are up --- well, hi! Hollyhocks, hydrangeas, and marigolds too --- oh, my! Along with everything else, I might wind up with more flowers than ever this year. Sweet situation..

You can do either. Let it bloom now and appreciate the first bloom, and when that is done, dead-head it low to above a pair of healthy side shoots. Or prune it now relatively low to get a branching plant with lots more flowers a bit later. I don't think it matters too much with Zinnias.
I have a lot of a mixed variety and am letting the first buds bloom. If I get a color I especially like, I'll prune it and use the clipping to make a cutting. They root easily.
Some flower farmers do a combo approach - they pinch the buds of half the plants early for more branching, and the other half they let bloom to get earlier flowers.

I got an open blossom on one of my Envy plants, but it's yellow, not green! The blossom has finer petals, like in the photo, but it's not at all green. Maybe the other 2 plants will be green, or later flowers. I can see the rest are all getting loaded up with buds! Nothing visible on the Mexican sunflowers, but good growth, and not a lot of growth on direct seeded zinnias, but it's early. Canary zinnia on the right, Envy, on the left, which is supposed to be green! Maybe other blossoms, or plants? by pepperhead212, on Flickr
