Wintersowing is calling my name again. I was admiring the seed pods on the Redbud tree today. Seed pods = propagation I probably won’t be wintersowing veggies…just flowers and maybe those Redbuds. Things that won’t matter if I fail. Just a reminder that if you might want to do this, save your jugs and be sure to have potting mix that isn’t frozen solid. Now, where’s the seed catalog? Pinetree arrived today.

I've seen some videos on this. I had no idea germinating things like that in the cold could be so successful. Very interesting.

I've had remarkable success with winter-sowing in plastic jugs here.
Lettuces & Asian greens, different colors/varieties of Coneflowers, perennial herbs, etc., etc., all perform beautifully with this method. The most important thing - especially here in relatively mild-winter Virginia - is to remember to vent (remove the cap) from the jugs in sunny weather. Even in very cold sunny weather, your seeds/seedlings can cook. And then, of course, to remember to cap them back up after sunset.

A terrific way to start seeds, saves on energy and eliminates the hardening off schlep...

I finally remembered to gather seed pods from the Redbud trees. The pods are pliable/leathery. Removing the seeds should be fun. I’m hoping they will become less pliable and easier to crack open. Also considering using scissors to cut through the pod, ending up with one seed still inside a tiny piece of pod. If Mother Nature can break down a whole pod to bring forth new sprouts, I’m hoping the seeds will find their way out of a tiny piece of pod.

I have some pink and white dandelion seeds I never got around to planting. They might be a good candidate.

I’m afraid the codes department will sit me if I put jugs in my patio. However, I have a small greenhouse. Can I wintersow in jugs in my greenhouse? I have never done winter sowing before and have a lot to learn.

Wintersown.org is not connecting, but I did find this facebook group that might have some info. Many are saying you don't necessarily need jugs. They show some tunnels made of various things, some in wooden boxes.

That may defeat the purpose of wintersowing, which is based on seeds sprouting at the time they would in nature. If you just want an early start on Spring, a greenhouse is great. I use my basement and fluorescent lights.

Thank you! I’ve been trying to connect to wintersown.org, and just thought the link was old. Good to know it’s not just me. I understand there is a lot to learn at this site. So, just use dirt and pots in the greenhouse, then? I got sited for having pots of soil in my backyard. Don’t know what they would do about jugs or pots with plastic over them. Or maybe I can get away with hiding some jugs behind the greenhouse but really need a fence. Someday!

Welcome to the forum, johnsongs1! What area do you live in, where they would site you for for the jugs?
