When I was working, I was getting $2.50 a dozen from women at work. They probably miss that deal.

My egg lady sent out a message to all her customers last night asking if anyone would be offended if she raised the price to $2 a dozen. I told her I didn't have a problem with that.

I haven't noticed any recently shortages, just skyrocketing prices. Isn't that the truth! Our food budget is pretty much set in stone and I refuse to take away from it for fuel. I'm shocked that milk is moving close to $5 a gallon, meat prices are outrageous and things like raw honey have went up over $3 from last year. I buy very little pre-packaged food and am glad to have the knowledge and ability to cook meals from scratch. I do have to wonder about those families who always have the cart piled full of boxed food and microwave meals. I bet these prices are hitting them hard too.

Latitude33, martywny, breezygardener, Wheelgarden, datgirl, gardendmpls, emmsmommy, binnylou, SpringRain🕊️, gianna, desertwoman, I am seeing grocery prices that just do not make sense. If I had to venture a guess, price gouging would be that guess. A great opportunity to screw over people that do not have a choice, as has been the norm forever with fuel. Fuel prices go up immediately when there is a refinery issue or a hurricane but take forever to come back down after the issue has been resolved. Any day I expect to see an investigation on TV.

Just got back from grocery shopping. Went to Meijer for some things and then to Aldi for other things that were a better price. Crazy.

martywny, exploitation comes to mind as a description of the rampantly rising prices. Your comment on (commodities) items over which no choice can be exerted is spot on. Fuel and other commodities which we can't produce ourselves are good targets. And these days many more home items than existed when I was growing up, or a few decades ago, have segued into becoming commodities to some folks. This reminds me of a simple example. I can't remember exactly when this occurred, perhaps when I was still working, which would be before 2003. I was discussing with a friend the decline of basic home knowledge in the material, yarn, and similarly related fields. We grew up sewing, embroidering, altering and making our own clothes. The individual with whom I was speaking shared an incident in which a younger member of society had no idea how to sew own a button.

datgirl, have you noticed how much Meijer has jacked up prices, especially in frozen foods? (That might be here just in Michigan though.)

SpringRain🕊️,I think they've jacked up prices on everything. I used to shop exclusively at Meijer, just because I don't like grocery shopping anyway, so going to numerous stores was a pain to me. Not anymore. I'll go Meijer maybe once a month and if they have a decent sale going on. I even found the cereal hubby likes at Menards cheaper than any grocery store.

The individual with whom I was speaking shared an incident in which a younger member of society had no idea how to sew own a button. Funny you bring that up, my granddaughters have been known to bring me items that needed buttons sewn back on. I would do it for them but make it a lesson - here's how you position the button, fit the spacer in there, how much thread, color, etc. They now have a valuable skill to add to their resume! Here's something else, the futures market. Commodities traders have an effect on gas prices and in a nation so dependent on oil, all fuels should be bought and sold by the government instead of the markets; we do not need more people in the middle adding layers of profit to the price. Any thoughts on that one?

And of course there is the government printing up a lot of money to cover it's high spending. That is one of the harbingers of inflation. The more you print , the less it's worth. Hopefully we won't end up like Venezuela.

nd of course there is the government printing up a lot of money to cover it's high spending. Government should not be allowed to run a deficit budget and I often wonder why that particular item is never brought up for a vote by the people. It's just like the unfunded government pensions here in New York State, if I tried that in my business I would be in jail.

the unfunded government pensions here in New York State I paid into my teacher's pension for plenty enough years, and the City put in some matching funds in lieu of a higher salary. The money was well invested by those running the system and it is a wonder that the state has not found a way to tap into it for it's own nefarious purposes. It annoys me when people say I get a free pension. I invested the money during my early years so I could live decently after retirement. I could have used that money while raising my kids and then become a burden to the state taxpayers in my old age.

It annoys me when people say I get a free pension People are quick to judge those they feel have it better than they do. The main issue between my MIL and I is her constantly remarking on who bought what and how they can't afford it or commenting that people should buy something because they have more money than they know what to do with. She wants me to fix an all-in-one computer which I have absolutely no experience in fixing and I told her that fixing my mom's old computer comes first. She remarked that mom should just buy a new one because they can afford it. Yes, my mom came from a prominent family but my grandparents couldn't handle money and sadly they were living on government assistance and VA benefits when they passed away. We lived paycheck to paycheck growing up and it was only in the fifteen years or so before retirement that I'd say they lived comfortably. Now they are in the same boat as many retirees and living on social security and moms meager pension and unlike my MIL they don't get assistance. Yep, they are sure living it up on the free money. Another thing that bugs me is when people are on unemployment and remark that they paid into it so it's only fair that they get some of it back. Um, no. Your employer alone pays unemployment taxes. So essentially your employer's compliance allows you to get some free money based on your quarterly earnings, or at least that's how it works in this state. I get some mean looks when I say that to people. Okay back to the government controlling fuel. What's to say that they won't decide to issue fuel allotments in the future? If you control the essential element to get to place to place, wouldn't you essentially control the people? Of course is that so much different than things are right now when fuel prices are forcing people to try and limit their travel as much as possible or paying with a credit card because they simply can't afford fuel.

With respect to food shortages, since covid my shopping practices have drastically changed, and I doubt will revert much. I go maybe once per month and use the freezer. Currently I grow all my own veg, so in the store, I buy meat, eggs, dairy and paper products, coffee, nuts. etc. Cocoa I stocked up on last fall when Costco was selling my favorite at 1/3 the Amazon price. Prices in general have gone up, but the stores always have what I'm looking for. Not so at the beginning of the pandemic. I'm still buying cat foods online. When I see a deal, I'll buy extra.
