I also posted this on the "Animals" forum:
We lost our Beagle/Rat Terrier cross a few months ago, & as we do with all the pets we lose, she's buried on the property. As we also always plant something over the graves of our beloved companions, we were going to plant something over her earlier, but wanted to wait until the forecasted cicada emergence to pass, but luckily they didn't emerge here. So now Fall is here, & we're researching what we want to install above her, so thought I'd ask for suggestions here. We're looking at anything from a tall-growing perennial to a shrub or small tree. The area is mostly sunny with shade in the late afternoon, & is something that has to be at least recommended as deer-resistant. There is a tree on either side of the area (not too close), so it can't be anything that gets too large. Any favorites that fit the above?

I’m partial to redbud trees…no guarantees about the deer. Two Redbuds on our yard are not bothered by deer, but the one planted in the back four has been “caged” to allow it to gain some size. I like the canopy they create.
Is the intended site visible from a window that you might look out of multiple times during the day. When in bloom, they create such a pretty rosy glow. And I love their heart shaped leaves.

Thanks - but we're overrun with Redbuds here - both cultivated & wild. Our property is host to probably at least a dozen natives, & we actually have to weed a lot of seedlings out of the yard thanks to all those seed pods.
I'm surprised you have such trouble with deer eating them. We're in the middle of deer heaven here & in more than 20 years the deer have yet to touch any of the Redbuds. Of course, ours are all the wild variety - maybe cultivated varieties taste better.
