Hiya ruth... I've planted Munstead, Hidcote Blue, English and French Long... Of course, I started out labeling everything but by the time things got planted in the yard, I didn't bother to keep track of which variety was where... The only one I could tell the difference was the French Long which had more delicate, frilly-like leaves in comparison to the others...

Sounds great! I've heard they are hard to start from seed. Have you tried propogating any from cuttings? We are wondering what the 'organic friendly' way is to do cuttings. Do people use normal rooting powder, I presume not? I heard you can just try spit and a bit of cinnamon.... or honey... I guess you might not know if you've only grown from seed....

ruth... Winter sowing the seed produced good results for me and I didn't have to do a thing except plant them and forget them, pretty much... A few years ago, I attempted to root some tender lavender cuttings, stuck the cuttings in soil after dipping them in some old Rootone I had around and kept them in a clear plastic covered, tented kind of thing...They seemed to look and do well at first but unfortunately, I did not tend to them as I should have and they all perished... I never tried that method again since the winter sowing has worked so well...

Do people use normal rooting powder Some rooting powders are made from natural hormones, some from willow extract, so I would not rule them out of organic entirely. There may be some organic certified.

So both our bare root lavender and the little plug plants we bought have worked! Very encouraging. Here are some pictures....

Started Munstead from seed, and they've come up beautifully. I like lavender and Sweetie likes lavender, and we're excited about it. It already smells like a dream. Our first try at growing it.
