Does anyone know what this stuff is. It is coming up great in the flower beds and since they are essentially bare, anything that grows is welcome as long as it is not noxious. Alan

armjr, I don't think I've ever seen these kinds of leaves. Perhaps it's a southern plant or native to Texas?

Well, we'll let it go. Perhaps after it flowers it'll be easier to identify. I've been searching images for something similar.

Possibly tomatillo?

It looks vaguely familiar- I'm guessing a native wild flower of some kind that likes dry-ish conditions. I'll look around my yard tomorrow for something I think looks something like that. But I'm with you: if it grows and it's green and doesn't need a lot of water, wait and see what it does.

Sort of reminds me of a dahlia.

I'm guessing tomatillo or a wild tomato of some sort. They're a little prickly, and are common in the south.

armjr, There is an app called PlantSnap, snap a pic and it tells you what the plant is. You can find more info by googling or on Facebook.

Mumsey, yes, I found that this morning. I haven't put it on my phone yet. Thanks! Alan

armjr ... I have what I thought was the same thing growing out back until I took this pic of it and found it is somewhat different than yours... I have no idea what this is but it is extremely healthy and hardy... At first look it appears to be chrysanthemum-like, but it's not that... It's grown here before...I'm letting it grow for now and will see how it develops...

Ours is starting to flower. Smallish yellow buds. We'll see.

Have to agree with Emmsmommy, it does look similar to a Dahlia. Be sure to post a picture of a bloom. Could be if you haven't grown them before that a squirrel dug up a tuber from somewhere else and "planted" it last fall.

I think we can rule out Dahlia... Alan

That's pretty much what the flowers do then the petals fall off.
