Asparagus sends up shoots at 50. Princess and I just ate 3 shoots. Never had it appear this early. Farmers plant corn at 50. My asparagus bed gets late afternoon shade. So checked temp in area where tomatoes will go. Near 65. So guess who is going into the ground tomorrow? Bean area near 60, it was covered with leaves. So I planted pole beans. Very early for the soil to be so warm, but we only had 3-4” frost this Winter.
I might go crazy and plant peppers and eggplant too. After I have cataract surgery May 6 I’m supposed to stay out of garden for a week! Because it’s a dirty area. No way. The garden is cleaner than the house this time of year! LOL

Our soil is warmer, earlier, too. With several frigid snaps but no prolonged freezes, it was the first winter that didn't bring soil temperatures to freezing since we've lived here. Go crazy!

I snooped through old asparagus posts. These are my dates for first appearance.
2021. 4/27 2020. 4/23 2019. 5/9 2018. 4/20
The spear found today was the first of picking size. There’s been several really slender spears, but I think they are really new plants from dropped seeds.
BTW, I didn’t harvest the big one. I’m hoping he will have a sibling or two tomorrow. I’ll pick it either way.

binnylou. Sis lives a little farther south than us and she is seeing first shoots now. We are usually a couple weeks later. Such strange weather. I actually picked 2 a couple days ago.

Mumsey Maybe wear some of those goggles, that totally seal around the eyes. I wear those for cutting up really wicked onions! I think DeWalt is the brand. I tested the soil temp 8" down, in several places, and it was 60-62°. I am going to try a few beans, and maybe some other things. After these high 80s temps we will be getting, it should warm up even more! Tonight, I'll be soaking those winter squash seeds.
