My Felco pruners are over 35 years old. I love them and we have been through a lot together. I have replaced the cutting blade and spring a couple of times; the anvil has always remained in good shape. The red sleeves for the handles have a few worn spots, but to me that adds soul- these pruners have history. But they need work.
Do I rebuild them with parts (blade and anvil) or is it time to buy a new pair?

You’ve had them this long, salvage them if you can!

I'd buy a new pair but keep the old ones. Make some garden art out of them or just keep them for a spare pair. Might be time to make some new history.

If they are repairable, in a cost effective manner, that would be my choice. I dislike change, and get used to the feel of a tool in my hand. I’m that way with kitchen paring knives. I was lucky to find two on eBay that are direct replacements for my aging paring knives.

I'd buy a new pair but keep the old ones. So you're suggesting neither divorce, nor reconciliation, but a blatant affair on the side? You realize that they'll probably live in the same drawer or box together, right? Kinda awkward, dontcha think?

I'd try to salvage them, but then again I have patches and on top of patches on my jeans and keep repairing a cheap greenhouse that should have been put on the junk pile years ago.

There is an old not particularly great joke that in heaven Your mechanic is German Your lover is French Your policeman is English Your cook is Italian And it’s all organized by the Swiss In Hell Your lover is Swiss The policeman is German The mechanic is French Your cook is English And it’s all organized by Italians I’d say it’s time to try to change your affections from the Swiss to the French so you get on the right side of the love equation I’ve been very impressed by the French made Bahco pruners , specifically the PX M2 , not cheap but cheaper than Felco’s. I have both and the bahcos are much nicer to my mind. I’m not the only one northcoastgardening.com/2008/10/bahco-pruning-shears-im-a-raving-convert/northcoastgardening.com/2009/04/hand-pruner-felco-corona-bahco/I’d recommend giving them a go of course the latest trend seems to be pruners/secateurs made from the same steel as Japanese samurai swords www.telegraph.co.uk/recommended/home/best-secateurs/

I have a pair of Corona bypass pruners, which work great and come in various sizes, but Bahco makes good stuff as well.

So what I'm learning from this is that I have poor taste in lovers and might potentially harbor a blatant affair.
After all these years I've decided to reconcile. Why mess with a good thing? I may not know what I am missing with Bahco but I have been extremely happy with Felco. My Felco will get new parts at less than half the price of a new pair and we will continue on in our decades long dance. If/when the day comes that we have had our final dance I will definitely consider Bahco as my next partner.

Sounds good. You're not dumping your lover, just giving him a knee replacement. ;)

Thought about this dilemma when I got out our vintage loppers. Gee those big Fiskar ones look tempting and brother has one. They cut like butter. I decided to WD40 them and now they work fine. Need sharpening which I can get Dad to do.
So it’s reconciliation here too.

In any case, it sounds like counseling or some sort of intervention may be in order. Just sayin.

Are you offering counseling services? Even I know that would be ill advised.
