Started at the bottom. I wonder why they had trouble then with transplanting cucumbers. I find it works better than direct seeding. Maybe something to do with the climate of the garden writer or the varieties.
I see they used formaldehyde for damping off. Now considered a carcinogen. Since they mentioned conserving electricity (in the section on hot beds), I suppose using a fan over the seed starts to prevent damping off was not an option.
