I have an overseas acquaintance who is under all sorts of pressure and whose wife would like to grow food in their apartment. I think they could grow sprouts, but uncooked sprouts are dangerous. Has anyone ever grown and cooked sprouts? Is it worthwhile? Could sprouts add to their food supply?

I've always wanted to grow sprouts as well, & in fact bought some Mung bean seeds particularly meant for sprouting, but haven't tried them yet. What makes me leery is that sprouts - even home-grown ones - have been frequently linked to serious food poisoning, as in life-threatening.
Maybe your friend would be better off trying lettuce & other greens under grow-lights. Or even one of those hydroponic/light systems that allows you to grow greens, herbs, tomatoes, & even peppers.

It's the eating them raw that is dangerous. Grow-lights are out of the question. Inflation has taken their life savings.

Sure do want to do sprouts, haven't tried...yet. Seems like a proper soil-less method would help keep certain pathogens down. Don't know. I want to know.

I think the best thing you can do is a few pots of fresh herbs, thyme, rosemary, parsley that sort of thing.
I've grown mustard cress before which is a nice fresh taste but not sure that it provides a huge supplement to your diet.
Fresh herbs can really uplift a dish made from basic ingredients and they are very expensive to buy

I think the best thing you can do is a few pots of fresh herbs, thyme, rosemary, parsley that sort of thing. I agree with you about the uplifting, but these are urban people who know nothing about growing plants. The wife is attempting to grow cactuses. She cries every time one dies. I have been unable to find out what kind of cactus she is growing -- jungle cactus like Christmas cactus or desert cactus, or whether the pots have drainage. Most likely the cactuses are being killed by overwatering. Sprouts can be grown by the numbers. Rinse the seeds four times a day, etc.
