Some of my okra has become bumpy and deformed. Like this: apps.lucidcentral.org/ppp/text/web_full/entities/okra_bumps__distortions_432.htmThe cause is probably stink bugs sucking juice out of the okra. Stink bugs are a major fall pest here, but I have learned how to catch them with a light 10 quart plastic bucket. The large green stink bugs are attracted to castor beans and are easily collected. The bucket is put under the leaf (or seed pod) and the leaf lightly tapped. The bug releases and falls into the bucket where it can be mashed. If it doesn't release, it is pushed from the leaf. The stink bug has the escape strategy common to many bugs. When disturbed, it slides from the leaf with a flipping action, falls into the air, and takes flight. A smaller container could be used to catch beetles on bush beans -- I'll try it next year. For okra, the flower cluster is bent over the bucket and shaken and tapped. Okra is attacked by the large green stink bug and also by dark ones that cannot be easily seen, so each flower cluster needs the bucket treatment. I got four stink bugs and one leaf-footed bug off six okra plants this morning. Since okra needs to be checked daily, debugging them is little extra effort.

I've never had this on my okra, but maybe the Surround that I sprayed on them frequently, to keep the black aphids off (my main concern with okra) kept those away. I don't have as many stink bugs as some areas have, but they are out there - they try to come in when it's cold!
I did get some fungal disease on the leaves toward the end of the season, during major rain periods, but it was on its way out then.

Stink bugs. Hmmmmm..... I had to look that one up on Google. The thing here that we call a stink bug is black and about 1 1/2 inch long. Never saw it in the garden. Usually out in the hay field. Oh well, I always say, "Have a problem? Fix the problem!" I won't attempt to tell you how to fix your stink bug problem, but I am sure there is a way. Go for it!

We used to call earwigs stinkbugs, because they did stink, but not as much as the other bugs with the name.
