On Aug 9, 2016, the woolly bear caterpillars were out in Iowa. Called "woolly worms" here. I didn't know what a Northern woolly bear was. It's a bicolor caterpillar, rusty red in the middle and black on both ends. In woolly bear symbolism, red = warm, and black = cold. If there is more red than black, the winter will be mild. www.almanac.com/woolly-bear-caterpillars-and-weather-predictionNo cheating! It's the first one you see, not the most favorable one you eventually find, that counts. The Old Farmer's Almanac omits this necessary rule. What are called "woolly worms" here are all black, and the harshness of winter is judged by the heaviness of the "fur", which is probably the same for all of them, so by the number of woolly worms you see. These black woolly worms are abundant this year.

No "woolly Worms" here. Just judging by what weather we have had so far I am leaning towards a mild winter. Have fun!

Hiya tom π... When I saw this thread title, I had forgotten which color pattern was for which coldness and was going to look it up first but I said to myself that I'll bet Tom explains it for us...And surely enough, you did...So I thank you very much, Tom!... I have learned much from your informative posts... I will be on the lookout now for woolly bears...

"It likes low elevations and damp areas."
It won't like high dry Northern Utah then.

We've always called them "Wooly bears" around here, and the color-code symbolism is said to be the same. Likewise, the first one you see is supposed to be the one that counts. They're usually numerous in October in my clime. Haven't seen one yet.

Have not seen one here yet this year. I'm betting on a snowier winter since last year was scant.

Only a few Wooly Bears here at the moment. They won't come on in large numbers until next month here in Virginia.
