Seventeen turkeys checking out our front yard…four of them checking from the roof of the house . Several really large toms. It would take a big roaster for one of the toms. I swear that they have increased in size in just the past few weeks. I was watching out the front window and one dropped from the roof, right in front of me. Another was watching in the window…watching me watch her. I decided they were getting too comfortable, so I yelled at them to get off my roof. They headed for the garden area. Hubby is going to have to rethink his bird feeder plan.

Turkeys have been absent this year, very strange. We usually have regular gangs wandering through, late summer through fall. Guess that's why I didn't have much grape and blueberry theft, or single beak-pecks in the tomatoes.

Wheelgarden, I think your turkeys must have headed north. There was 14 hens in the front yard around noon…not a fellow in sight. About an hour after they left the area, 7 toms move through the yard, single file. I wonder how they decide which one is the leader?

Turkeys have been visiting the front yard several times each day, cleaning up the food we put out for cardinals, woodpeckers, etc.
Today I looked up just in time to see one of the turkeys strike and glance off the living room window. Insurance folks would have fun with that claim. Luckily, no damage done to window.

Turkeys haven’t disappeared, but one hen looks like she was attacked by something. Neighbor says there’s a bobcat in the area. Brother says a bobcat goes up the tree at night and attacks a turkey.
The hen is missing about half of her neck feathers…tail feather appear to be okay, but she looks like she might be missing some rump feathers also.
We had 16 hens visit yesterday…when they left, 7 toms showed up.
What the turkeys didn’t eat, the deer…nine of them…moved in to see what was left. One of the deer was an 8 point buck that has been seen several times.

I was working in the garden late afternoon, and I hear crashing/fluttering noises. When I looked up, I see a hen turkey up in the top branches of the oak tree. It must have been a challenged landing because it sure was noisy. Then, just minutes later, I saw a hen turkey out on the gravel road. She was just standing there. And then I realize that she taking the kiddies for a walk. Then another hen comes out of the bush and more kiddies. It’s a turkey parade. There must have been 20 little turkeys. I phoned hubby so that he could watch for them, but they must have gone in to the corn field. He did see/hear the first hen turkey go soaring over the pine tree as she was heading for the oak tree. Who knew that turkeys could fly. . Gordon Jump would enjoy.

Eleven Tom turkeys moving through the area east of the garden this morning. And one in the veggie garden. I could tell that he had tested the electric fence…he was showing respect and keeping away from it, but he was showing a bit of distress as the gang moved on without him. I knew if I went to the garden and opened the gates, he would panic and possibly get tangled in the fencing. I didn’t see him leave, but he was gone when I went to the garden.
As for why he was in the garden or how he got inside the fencing, I can only assume that he spent the night in one of the big oaks near the garden. When he came out of the tree, he must have drifted in. I hope he warns his buddies.

Our turkey log has been lower this year than in the past. While we did see a couple of hens with lots of poults in the Spring, they dwindled down to where we only saw one poult with three hens a few weeks ago, & in the past couple of weeks, we've only seen one group of three hens & one single. At this time of year we usually see quite large flocks - some of hens; some of toms. Nothing like that so far.

The route I have picks up city kids but many towns have lots of woods especially near a river which we cross in a few spots. Maybe 2 or 3 times a month we see a batch of turkeys about 4 or 5 pretty much in the same location. This morning we saw a deer. It was down a hill from where we were....did not know if it was alone. Always exciting to see either where you least expect them.

We don't see as many deer as we used to thanks to Chronic Wasting Disease, but the rutting season is on, so public service has been warning everyone to be extremely careful while driving - day & night - because the deer won't be paying as much attention. Not that they do anyway.

Tuesday when I went to Dad's, there were 5 turkeys in the road and 3 very near the house! Dad has landowner tag and is hoping to get one.

We haven't seen any turkeys at all these past few weeks, which is a shame. Used to be we'd have large flocks roaming the property this time of year.
