Saw a pretty black and yellow butterfly on November 3rd! Think I've never seen a butterfly that late.
Granddaughter and I saw a black swallowtail laying her eggs on some of the dill, and then found the caterpillars about a month ago. I bought some little net insect pop ups and put the cat's in as I found them and they are outside in one of the garden beds with a small fence around them. I contacted the Butterfly Pavilion here and they said not to bring them inside, that they produce an antifreeze in their bodies and can withstand the cold weather and then will go to their cocoon state until spring. So we will be watching these over the winter. We wanted to see if we could protect some from the birds and other animals like raccoons that get curious and would maybe tip over or try to get into the little net tunnels. So hope to get some of these to maturity and see if we get some more butterflies in our yard!
