emmsmommy , please keep sharing your artwork! After my sister died, I attended some art "classes" at the Infusion Center where she got chemo and rads. It wasn't really a class, more like aspiring or existing artists with family or friend connections to cancer, getting together to relax and draw. The leader eventually held a small meeting of other artists, most of whom belonged to the Colored Pencil Society of America, which I learned had competitions and other activities for color pencil artists. There were even chapters in my area.
It was fascinating to see how they blended and created. Just the small gathering of artists and wannabes (that was me!) was enlightening. I was hooked, started more and more coloring projects, including one of hand coloring all the Christmas cards (I'll NEVER do that again!) for one season, and learned so much about values, color blending and more. I even bought the cadillac of colored pencils, the whole Prisma set of 120 (at that time, I think) pencils.
I understand your point about values and a #2 pencil. Although I don't remember the complimentary or blending colors, you might be able to explore more options with a few colored pencils...after you get all your gardening done!
