Why do you plant a garden? Because I'm a masochist.

All the above but also the feeling of making a commitment to a project and putting a real effort into it. In this day and age not many seem to do that anymore. At sweethearts with the garden next to the road it’s surprising how many of the people walking by stop to comment, kinda fuels the fire to stay on top of things.

As George Mallory said of Mt. Everest, because it's there. Besides, it's probably the safest pastime for me.

My father was a farmer, he had horses, milk cows and chickens. He always kept a spot he called the garden where he would grow corn, beans, potatoes and squash, plus a few other things. I guess I started tagging him around at an early age, and gardening just seemed a way of life. Mother would do some home canning and freezing to preserve some of the garden produce for winter use. When dad would have a beef killed, we never had a home freezer, but there was storage lockers at the local drugstore where you could rent freezer space to put a large amount of food such as a beef. We lived out on the farm, it was 7 miles down to the "local" drugstore. There was fish and game in season. We never ate fancy, and we never went hungry.

I think a couple of reasons One is certainly getting some fresh things from the garden thats often pretty difficult to find other ways. Once I've gotten used to something that tastes pretty good i find it hard to go back to an inferior (at least to me) product. Below is a collection from the garden for dinner tonight. A few things it would be difficult to purchase, For some reason fresh new potatoes seem not to be thing here, its a very common crop in europe this time of year and I really haven't seen an alternative. The little fingerlings i guess are close but I've yet to find any that compare to a freshly dug new potato. A few runner beans are there, try finding those to buy Herbs in industrial quantities, I'll chop up all that parsley and coat the freshly cooked potatoes with that and some butter and salt and pepper Unusual varieties, the pile of green leaves is a new to me kale variety thats very vigorous and tender 'Madeley' Secondly and perhaps more importantly it makes me feel better and I definitely have a positive feeling pottering about and trying new things and just caring for a bunch of plants. So mental health is definitely a part of it too
