I didn't take any pictures yet but,
#1 wife secured her top ranking yesterday when she unintentionally revealed my birthday present. A brand new Oklahoma Joe's BBQ pit! Now while meat is the primary prep for tomorrow, I plan on adding some fresh veggies to the grill as well! Some carrots, a couple of onions and maybe even a pot of greens to cook down in the smokiness. She's always a wonderful gal but she did real good this time.
My old smoker bit the dust last spring and we haven't had anything but gas grilled since then. Just not the same. Can't wait till it's Zucchini time! Oh, I love to split a big Zook down the middle, season it, sear it and let it cook in its own juices till done.
I'm on cloud nine.

Happy Birthday- a day early!
There's nothing like a good smoker. What will you use to burn?

Thanks Karen.
DW, I usually start with oak to get a bed of coals and then switch to mesquite for smoke. If I'm cooking something like a brisket that take a while, I will alternate with some seasoned oak and mesquite. There are times, as much as I like mesquite, that it becomes overpowering. I try to keep a balance with heat and smoke (that's what I try to do anyway). It's easier for me to talk about what I like to do than it is for me to do what I like to do. We never throw any out though.
I have tried other woods like pecan and some of the fruit woods (apple, peach) but we always go back to mesquite and oak.
Now, if you can get some seasoned mesquite roots of the very dark red and heavy variety, they make the absolute best smoking wood there is. The smoke has a very sweet smell and imparts that to the food.
I gotta go get a paper towel now to clean the drool off the keyboard.

Happy Birthday Alan. What a great gift.
I can't remember where you are located so I don't know if it's bar-b-q season, but if you click profile in the black bar at the top of the page, you can type your location in the Update Status box.

Happy Birthday Alan!
One thing we like here is the braggin'. We love to hear of both successes and failures....my problem it's more one sided to the failures but with everyone here helping, the successes are coming' along.

Thanks guys. It was a great day. BBQ pit worked like a charm. Had a surprise visit from a young friend and his budding family. A little blond headed girl (3) and a strapping boy (5 mos). Anybody with kids is always welcome in my house! All my grandchildren came. Two sons made it and two daughter in laws brought German chocolate cake and some decadently sinful stuff called "Chocolate Eclair Cake". A feller can flat make himself sick on that. There wasn't any room on the pit for the veggies but I'll save them for #1 wife and I. #3 son gave me one of those veggie grills that holds them all together while they grill. We did some chicken, sausage and a couple of steaks. It was a lot of fun.
All in all it was a great day. God has granted me 60 years of health and well being on His Earth and I am eternally grateful for all His blessings. And I am also grateful to be able to share those blessings with my friends on this forum. Thank you all.
I picked a bunch of spinach this morning and the kids took most of it. Still plenty for a big spinach salad tomorrow.

The BGE is a good pit. Never had one but I prefer wood to charcoal.
